Vikings @ Packers

Wow, another big win yesterday for the Vikings as they rolled into Lambeau Field, and although they made it closer than it had to be, they secured a big win on the road against the Packers. It’s never easy to beat the Packers at home. The Vikings looked like they just might lay down a whoopin’, as they went up 28-0. Mistakes cost the team, starting with a fumbled punt at the very end of the first half which paved the way for the Packers to get their only score of the first half. They turned the turnover into a quick TD, and the half ended 28-7. Two more turnovers in the second half, along with a sputtering offense, almost gave the game away. The defense, in the end, came up big with forced turnovers of their own in the 4th quarter, and the Vikings won 31-29 (yes, it got that close).

In the end, a win’s a win. The Vikings are now 4-0, are 1-0 in the division, and are still sitting alone atop the NFC North. I don’t think many fans expected the team to be in this position heading into week 5, so I think we can go ahead and be happy. It’s hard. As Vikings fans, we’re always waiting for the gut punch. It still might come, but this year’s team sure feels a lot different than teams of the past. I honestly think this is the most talented and balanced team that I’ve seen in my Vikings fandom, which stretches back to 1980. I’m lovin’ it.

The rest of the NFL

If you have no other reason for optimism, look around at the rest of the NFL. I don’t see a team that really scares me anymore, it feels like this Vikings team has a legit shot to defeat any team they face. There is a lot of turnaround this year in terms of good teams getting worse. Who expected the Eagles to look as bad as they’ve looked? The Bengals (year 2 of sucktitude)? There are some good teams, and I expect the Vikings to have the ebbs and flows of an NFL season. I’m not expecting perfection, but this should be a really fun year to be a Vikings fan.

  • Keep the NSFW to a minimum. We don’t need anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • All in all, be adults. Treat each other with respect and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. Are the Detroit and Seattle offenses that good or are their defenses suspect?

Seattle inexplicably goes for two after their TD, and fails. Down 28 to 20, instead of 28-21.

A “ring of fire” eclipse of the sun is coming. But only a lucky few will be in the path.

The annular solar eclipse will be visible Wednesday over Easter Island and the tips of Argentina and Chile.

Here’s how to safely watch the final solar spectacle of the year.

As a geologist who has studied the earth and it’s climatic cycles for the past few BILLION years, I am sure if a few things:

1. Earths climate is changing, it always has, and always will
2. We are contributing to some of that change, but know one knows how big our contribution is
3. When we become extinct, the earth will recover.

My favorite climate change fact revolves around Julius Cesears first invasion of Brittain, a few years before the birth of Christ. The seaside port in France that the Romans launched from us now 50 km inland. all due to a changing climate

I disagree there has been pure hate on both sides. Although it has gotten worse on the left. I don’t think it could get worse on the right. That is not a smack on the right, because it’s not correct to lump the right in with the super crazy religious nut jobs on the right who protest KIA soldiers with signs that say, “Thank God for Dead Soldiers.” Those people identify as conservatives but you can’t use that has a measuring stick for basically conservatives. If you can understand that easy logic you can understand how this psycho on the left also does not represent the left. We need to stop vilifying whole groups because the actions of the extremists. It just further divides us.

That they think it’s OK to hate and wish harm on people and that being justifiable has gotten worse on their side.

Of course you rarely see that. Just like when I talk to libs and they say the right is full of violent gun toting bigots, which of course there are some and of course that’s what their news algorithm or news sources they choose show… but when I say, you can’t label all people on the right because of a few extremists and there are crazy fucks on the left. They go, “I don’t see that kind of thing from the left like I do the right, or it’s rare that I see it.” Gee I wonder why they have that perspective… almost like they have a personal agenda attached to the situation. Seriously, you guys sound exactly the same. Like to a T, when I argue this exact thing with Libs, it always come down to, the bad things I am pointing out from their perspective is it’s rare for their side to be guilty of it and the other side is SO much worse from what they’ve seen.

This is another lie of the left. Extremists that are labeled “right” aren’t Conservatives, or politically right voters. This is just the trick of the labeling trade to associate terrible behavior with the right. More propaganda BS from the left. We’re not fascists, or racists, or Nazi’s, or white supremacists, or misogynists, or tyrants trying to overthrow democracy. That’s all the crap the left tags the right with. It’s all lies, and I am damn sick of it. Again, stop with the assignment of traits that no Conservative would ever consider, with the right.

You understand that that right? Please tell me you understand that. I really don’t want to think you are this twisted or brain washed or whatever. While it was “cool” in the morning, I mounted a box on the side of our shouse to house the power and controller for our Christmas lights. Had a couple of complications so by the time I was ready to scurry up on the roof to put up snow guards it was uncomfortably hot. Snapped my lines and was all set to place them and the nincompoops shipped the wrong size so I aborted.

Checked the time and it was 1230 in God’s time zone so figured a good time to quit and go start the game – but the grandson and his other granddad showed up with a load of manure and an auger the size of my torso mounted to an L95 (I’m planting trees next week). The soil was so dry where he drilled holes for the trees that it was like fine baby powder, so I set to work with a post hole digger pulling the soil out, by the time I got that powder out of the hole and filled the holes with 75 gallons of water apiece I was sweating like a highway worker in Alabama in August. I easily drank a gallon of water during the game. 96 at the end of September, gross.

Lot’s to clean up. I said this yesterday: was the best and rarest of wake-up calls – one that ended with a win.

Jets D will be tough. I think BFlo can make Rodgers uncomfortable by coming after him. Worked for Denver yesterday. Vikes are unbeaten in London. Hoping it stays that way.

Addison a difference maker when healthy. Athleticism off the charts. Get Hock back healthy soon. Offense looks to be damn dangerous a month from now with continued good health and continued good QB protection (#nojinx)

My rebuilt stride is finally paying off. I got a new 5K record of 27:25 yesterday morning. Maybe I can still break 27 before the year is up.

Now it is off to the beanfields…

for me, running is all about the power of peer pressure…

i ran a 5k a few years ago, and it was like 30:10, terrible time, i had to stop a couple times, felt gross and out of shape..

2 months later, i rana 5k for a friends bachelor party (he had a decathlon type event, 10 different sporting events and the first was a local charity 5k) and i ran it in 24:25 to keep up with all my buddies…

the power of peer pressure!!!

Observations from the game

kicker is good

Jones is better than any back for the last three years

Nailor WR is getting good, PR not good

defense had no pass rush the second half, but that guy filling in for pace has a knack for the ball

Ingram still sucks

darnold mostly good

An interesting article about what Americans really believe privately vs what they say they support publicly.
Americans are pretty united when ‘social pressure’ is taken out of it. For example:
Only 4% trust the Government to tell them the truth.
Only 7% trust the Media to tell them the truth.
Although not mentioned in the article I suspect more than 90% think the Puckers suck.

I watched the game yesterday with a Fellow Vikings fan who I dont see much any more and another mutual friend whose a Packers fan. I had fun, but I told him as soon as Nailor lost that punt in the Sun (which is what I think happened) that that was a momentum shift and I had anxiety and saw the wheels falling off the entire second half. I almost couldn’t watch the on side kick even knowing the odds of it happening were slim. Glad we kinda showed some week spots and still pull off the W. Now we know what to work on.

I dreaded the onside kick seeing that the cowpies had a successful one the week before. Very happy that the Vikes managed to escape with the W, but it should never have gotten that close. Our second half was crap, need to work on finishing off the opponent.

MT might be right though, if we’d embarrassed the FTP at home to the tune of a 50 burger they might have gone head hunting next time we play them. I’m sure the Vikes would have been capable of pulling it off the way they played the 1st half.

MT Viking
30 September 2024 10:22 am

I, for one, was relieved at the outcome of the game. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat and all.

  1. Beating up a division rival at their stadium inevitably comes back to haunt you at the worst possible time ie. playoffs. We were up 28-0 and absolutely everything going our way – a 50 point drubbing would have had GB circling Dec 29 on their calendar as the date for a wide variety of dirty hits.
  2. Matt LaFleur is a good coach and he and his team called a great second half. Flores and O’Connell not so much. We live to fight another day, gotta work on that.
  3. Love is no Rodgers but he is certainly a decent QB. I was glad he was hobbled and couldn’t break contain. Did we get a sack? I don’t recall one. Thank goodness they didn’t draft another HOF QB – if current appearances are correct. He seemed to get better as the game progressed. However, he hangs onto the ball in the pocket a split second too long, unlike Rodgers who always seemed to get the ball away a split second before the pocket collapsed.
  4. Before they almost pissed the game away, I was starting to think this was going to be the team to run the schedule despite my rampant pessimism before the season. Down to the last five minutes I was fast forwarding through play after play while hoping I wasn’t going to see GB players celebrating an onside kick recovery. Now I can reset my hopium from elite team to very good. Much better place to be.
  5. Watson’s injury looked really bad. Ugh. Glad Sam’s leg didn’t bend that way as he got rolled up.
  6. Speaking of, Darnold finally fell back to earth. Now we have some real coachable moments.

In other news: I almost destroyed my marriage this weekend. I was driving home from my nephew’s cross country meet. Wife calls.

“Are you going to Hy-Vee?” she asks.
“I’ve already been there. On my way home.”
“Why didn’t you call me?”
“Uhm…”
“I always call you before I go to Hy-Vee in case you need something. Now I need something, and I’m stuck.”
“What did you need?”
“Cotton pads for removing makeup.”
“Okay…”
“Yeah, are you going back to get some?”
“No, I’m like a mile from home.”

She hangs up.

The battle continued once I walked through the door with further lectures on calling people when going to a store in case they need something. I then decided to just bite the bullet and went to a nearby store and got some cotton pads.

Of course they were the wrong ones. And I paid $3 too much for them besides.

An hour later, she was normal again.

You are still resisting the training, at your peril.

As an example, it took me awhile to call my wife if I was going to be even 15 minutes late getting home from work. “What took you so long?”, she would ask…oh a tough case came in/doc stopped in wanting a consult/was behind/had a quickie behind the developer with a hottie, etc. My personal undoing, the silent treatment for 30-45 minutes, would ensue.

Now I call and say I’ll be about 15 minutes late…”Why?” oh well such is the work part of marriage.

Part of becoming a doc is learning that everyone gets embarrassed by things that are part of the normal human condition. Embrace it!

I remember back in my care free single days I was getting it on the regular. I discovered that a large box of condoms was much cheaper at the warehouse stores. One time they had a coupon next to the boxes and I grabbed one. The young lady at the checkout didn’t know how to use the coupon thing so there was the whole elaborate “manager to the front” with ten people in line behind me. I almost died of embarrassment.

Now I would say, whooo hoo you go MT!

I think Vikes were out of challenges at that point, so they couldn’t do anything about it.

Refs reversed a call in the 1st half after a KOC challenge in an almost exact same situation with a FTP WR. Packers did get a little help in the end there to make things interesting…

Today we are playing the best football on both sides of the ball in the league. If the SB were next Sunday, we would win.
That said, doesn’t matter who has the best roster, it’s who’s playing the best football. Now, that can change come January..

Next Gen Stats Insight for Vikings-Packers (via NFL Pro):Jordan Love struggled against the Vikings’ blitz throughout the day, completing 16 of 25 attempts (minus-5.3% CPOE) for 157 yards, including one touchdown and two of his three interceptions coming vs. extra rushers.

This is one reason I hated the prevent-type change. Maybe it’s just PTSD from the last couple of years of Zimmer.

Yeah, you don’t give up the “big plays”, but I would argue to make all the short to medium plays very easy and thus, it is just as bad or worse IMO.

But 7 plays take longer and it is about the clock.
I don’t like it but I understand the logic of it.

Both are terrible if they don’t work.
Both are ok if they do work.

Generally agree. If I remember correctly, Zimmer’s last year, our 2:00 minute defense gave up more points – before half and at end of game – than any team ever.

He might. We have a shutdown defense that allows the offense to play wide open now, instead of that prevent offense we have had to watch for years. That Zimmer era, ball control, burn clock, long, time-consuming drives, to keep the game close shit always bugged me. The offense can attack now, and go for big plays. LOVE IT!

I told my wife yesterday that “cheat mode” would be engaged when the Vikings were up 28-0 to start to close the gap and make the game watchable (and the NFL’s general desire for the Packers to win), and wouldn’t you know it, some terrible calls get the game to be winnable for the Packers.

I was reminiscing about the time a 50+ yard field goal only took 3 seconds off the clock in order to allow GB enough time to come back and win against some team a few years ago. They needed that last 1 or 2 seconds for the final play, and by golly, they got the W!

Granted, there were other factors in this game (offense ineptitude in 2nd half, KOC being his Jekyll-Hyde self of good/bad), but some pretty significant calls for the Packers to keep them in it.

Undoubtedly. When they review calls and still get them wrong (in obvious ways), it’s hard to believe otherwise.

Yet, some people still think there’s integrity in the NFL. They claim “they couldn’t rig it with so many people, that’s just dumb”. For those geniuses – It’s just the refs, not the players and coaches. They’re not telling players to drop balls. They’re just “missing” calls and calling stuff to stifle or extend drives, etc.

I missed out on the game yesterday, as my wife and I were helping a friend and her husband (he’s 80) recover from Helene storm devastation. They live near the Gulf coast in New Port Richey and their beautiful home was flooded by over two feet of storm surge seawater. It’s a mess, and of course there will be a significant reconstruction effort. We moved all the furniture out of the house, cleaned up debris, fill garbage bags full of stuff that was totally ruined, etc. Long day, with several friends who showed up. No power of course, and the house was hot and smelled like a sewer. 12 and half hours later, we all were dog tired, but the elderly couple was so thankful for our support.

You are a good doobie NLNV. This is what loving your neighbor is all about.
I missed the game as well due to my own incompetence. We were scheduled to help take care of my father-in-law (dementia and diabetes) this weekend and I thought I had set up the DVR to record the game. When I got home at 3:15 and put on my Vikings gear and looked for the recording I was pretty disappointed that I had botched it somehow….Oh well, first world problem.

Kudo’s to you NoDak as well. Dementia is such a terrible thing. It is so heartbreaking. I watched the replay of the game this morning on my NFL+ subscription, so at least I got to see it. My wife is Ravens fan, and we turned the game on when we got home. Fell asleep within 10 minutes. She watched that game this morning and was delighted to see Josh Allen get his ass kicked, while Cris Collinsworth slobbered all over him the whole game.

Thanks JR. We had a lot of high winds, lost a couple screen panels on the Lanai, and had a lot of debris to clean up, but we had no issue with flooding. This house is going to be torn down to the studs inside and all the wiring, and outlets replaced etc. Gonna take a couple months.

A wet house sucks and like you said, it smells. I’ve had a little experience with that and it’s no fun. At least with ours, it was just a finished basement. While I had to throw out 1000 books, at least it did not disrupt our main living areas. Wet shag carpet really smells in case you are wondering.

Haha yeah, exactly what makes me think (know) the NFL is rigged to a large extent. We can all plainly see that he bobbles and doesn’t have control, but yet, “it’s an interception!”. Along with the Nailor spot at the end. Just rigged BS.
