Vikings Discussion & Random Thoughts

It’s the peak of the week, everyone! Kiddo and I tried fishing yesterday afternoon, but we didn’t have much luck. The wind made it fairly unpleasant, so we packed it in a bit early.

Vikings and NFL News

From Sports Illustrated, the Vikings training staff is under fire after how they handled Carson Wentz’s injury.

Vikings.com has a nice piece on Jaylen Redmond. He’s a nice kid, we met him in the elevator at training camp, I’m happy that he’s having success this year.

They also look at where the Vikings stand in the major power rankings.

CBS Sports released their NFL coaching hot seat rankings. I don’t see Kevin O’Connell on there yet.

Media Selection

This one is interesting, a perspective they don’t teach in schools.

Thread Guidelines

  • Keep politics to a minimum. We are adults, news happens, and we can talk about it. What we don’t want is to go down rabbit holes and turn a productive conversation into name calling and personal attacks.
  • Be respectful and civil. You don’t need to agree with everyone, you also don’t need to make it personal. Attack the argument, not the poster.
  • Keep the NSFW language/pictures to a minimum. We don’t want anyone getting in trouble at work for hanging out here.
  • To summarize, behave like adults. Treat each other with respect, and things will be fine. Mods will take out content they feel is pushing the boundary. If you want to reach out about something, please do. We want to have robust discussions, that’s why we’re here, just be civil.
  • Twitter sized version: Be cool to one another.

Everything the Twins do from here on out will be to down size and get the team ready to sell the team and or prepare for the union strike. It will be nothing to make the team better or competitive. Do not watch. Do not give them your money.

Woke up at 5, couldn’t get back to sleep, gave up and got up at at 6.

Sounds like Trump got a decent deal with China, selling soybeans and getting rare earth while not giving up the newest chips.
China also promised to fight drugs but I have my doubts, plus deal is only good for a year then renegotiate.

Sounds pretty good but the left will find a million things wrong with it.
To me, given most every former President didn’t little in this area, believe Trump deserves high praise for even going after this.

The number of tangible accomplishments to date with Trump is astounding. No world leader has ever stopped or prevented 8 wars. Ever. Stopped illegal immigration at the border, and is bringing in over $18T in new business (and counting). Stopped inflation in its tracks. Deported hundreds of thousands of murderers, rapists, drug dealers, and human traffickers. Renegotiated all the trade deals with every country in the world, to our advantage, and is now bringing in hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs. Stock market is at all time highs (which he also did in his first term BTW). Has European leaders calling him “daddy”. Made NATO fess up 5% of their GDP for their own defense. Bombed Iran’s nuclear weapon program into the stone age and forced them to make peace with Israel. Federalized Washington D.C., sent in the National Guard, and ended rampant crime in 12 days. On and on and on. This President is a force of nature. He takes actions he is roundly criticized for by the left and their media propaganda arm, and is always right.

I’ve been to Sudan. A long time ago during the Darfur crisis, but it’s been a mess since its inception. Since Sudan gained independence in 1956, the country has experienced 20 military coup attempts, the most of any African nation.

The current civil war in Sudan began back in 2023. It’s ugly over there. Stopping a civil war? Good luck with that.

I think the point here is, why was Wentz on the field with two healthy QB’s on the sideline? THAT’s the question. Is a badly battered Wentz a better choice than McCarthy who suddenly says his ankle is completely fine today? 7 days removed from the game? He couldn’t have played Thursday, but today his ankle is completely healed? Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.

JacksonVike
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan
30 October 2025 6:36 am

In order for JJ to play last Thursday, Brosmer would have had to go in and get injured. So you’re OK with sending a rookie in just to get injured so JJ can play?

I thought Brosmer should have been QB1 and JJ QB2 going back to the Eagles game. But again, I was told Wentz was the best option to win. Apparently, so did KOC and had Wentz as QB1 and did not want to risk JJ re-injuring his ankle when not at 100%.

Stop twisting my words. I said, why was Wentz on the field with two healthy guys on the sidelines? Was a busted up Wentz so much better than these young guys that he had to go out there and get pummeled? Are these two guys so weak and under-prepared for the NFL that Wentz has to go out there and play? That’s my point.

JacksonVike
Reply to  No longer New Vikings Fan
30 October 2025 10:03 am

You act like I am the one who wanted Wentz to play. You have been advocating for Wentz to play the last 4 weeks. I wanted him out after the Browns game. Actually I wanted him out after the 1st quarter of the Steelers game.

Hind sight is 20/20, it’s easy to criticize after the fact. Did Wentz give us the best option, over Brosmer to win against the Chargers? Yes, he gave us a better chance to win over Brosmer.

By the way 7 days is a long time to go from 95% to 100% ready.

I said the offense was better under Wentz, and that was factual. Thus, Wentz was a better choice to start than McCarthy all things being equal. No one knew he had a cracked socket, and a torn labrum in his shoulder. We knew he had bad ribs though, which does affect your throwing motion. Even with all that going on, he threw for over 310 yards against the Eagles. And my point remains… why was Wentz playing with that severe an injury, when we had two young, healthy QB’s on the sideline. How bad are they? Really? McCarthy can’t play unless he’s absolutely perfectly healthy? His ankle on Monday was declared healed, but he couldn’t play on Thursday while Wentz was getting killed? Yesterday McCarthy was all bubbly and said “I feel fantastic”. Great, you can’t play unless you feel fantastic? Good luck with that in the NFL son.

So which teams in the NFL today might need a change at QB? The Jets? Yeah maybe. The Raiders? Yeah maybe. Does Cousins want to play for either of those teams? No.

Cousins isn’t going anywhere. There are no viable QB1 situations in the league.

I’m a big believer in’ people in glass houses shouldn’t……..’
Look at our QB situation. Wonder boy is hurt all the time and when he plays that’s scary too. Our backup just destroyed himself and I guess number three the coach doesn’t think enough of his “ego” to even play him.
To say that’s piss poor is rather kind.
We need at least mediocre QB play and if I was running this team I’d be shaking every bush to find something. And it ain’t bringing in some midget.

KAM has his pride. He decided on day one he needed to get rid of Cousins and his contract as soon as he could. He wanted a young QB on a rookie contract. He has two of those now.

It doesn’t matter what makes sense. It might have made sense to keep Darnold or Jones, rather than letting them both walk.

Gave up the game happily when my kids were little, when I realized I was gone for 5 hours and always came home angry. Bought a motorcycle and spent my weekends taking a 30 to 60 minute bike ride, then hanging out with family. Much better.

Empty nest and covid, my wife decided we were golfing again. So, we golf. I actually enjoy it, but 1x per week is enough for me. She goes 3x per week or more.

I have done the “I should wait in case I get all of it”, then I get talked out of waiting and then I get all of it, and then I feel like an ass.

1/3 is probably on the low end. I’m ok with food stamps for those that need it, but there needs to be more restrictions both on the people that receive them and what they can get. No more debit cards. It should be more like WIC and they can only buy limited, specific items.

We looked into food stamps when I was in med school, as several of our friends were on them. IIRC, as we owned our two cars and had a balance in our savings account we were effectively ineligible. Yet our circumstances were no different than our friends in the same boat. Definitely made budgeting easier for them.

This talk of KOC reminded me of a story I heard a long time ago. About the toughness of football coaches.
I played HS football in the late sixties. You know it was tough, no water during practice only salt pills. Lots of grass and Oklahoma drills.
I played for a coach who was tough but he played for Lou Saban (pretty famous NFL coach).
But my coach claimed Saban was the meanest coach in football.
Rules on timeouts were different then, my coach claimed when he played for Saban in college, Saban told the team if you get hurt during the last two minuted I expect you to crawl off the field cause I’m not going to waste a timeout on you.
Games a little different now. But maybe KOC is tougher than I thought.

Yes.
In the Berlin Brigade we had a ‘Parade Season’ and focused on 3 or 4 parades over 3 months ending with the 4th of July. The units did nothing but ‘pretty up’ and practice marching during that time.
Of course it was more about ‘showing the flag’ as we paraded in front of our ‘allies’; British, Russian, French, plus the Germans, from both the East and West.
The ‘Higher Ups’ considered that more important than anything else we did the rest of the year.

So the dream is dead??

Kirk Cousins

If you still had hope someone was trading for Cousins, it’s time to retire that dream. No one is paying for what they just saw. “Well, the OC doesn’t help.” Sure, that’s true, to a point. However, that doesn’t change the fact that Cousins looks like an old, worn-out version of himself.

He still can’t move. The one time he tried to get out of the pocket, he immediately regretted the decision. Balls were still late and lacking zip. Did this look like a $30M player, his price tag for 2025? The answer is unequivocally no. No one wanted to trade for Cousins, and they weren’t buying the shoulder injury story that came to light during last year’s Super Bowl media week. This was ultimately a bad investment, and it’s okay to admit it.

Theoretically, the Lions game can only maybe get so bad. Like if Campbell has his third stringers in by the third quarter, they probably won’t run the score up *that* much…

If JJ throws any INTs, things will get out of hand very, very fast. Lions and Goff already know how to beat Flores, but maybe they will forget with Ben Johnson gone. He really exploited us over the middle, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, I kind of like Campbell’s approach, too.

I was mostly just happy to finally see a coach that would actually use fourth down as more than a punt down. I always thought coaches were a bit too precious with fourth down.

Granted, Campbell is a bit TOO aggressive with fourth down.

Eagles probably are the ones that use fourth down best with their Tush Push weapon. They don’t have to view third and long as a problem. They just need to get enough yardage to Tush Push.

That’s a game changer right there.

I am really looking forward to Sunday. Any positives are going to be a big deal. Likewise, any negatives are going to be a big deal.

The reactions are going to be great!

Gone fishin'

I'm a dad, husband, Army vet, believer, and a die-hard, life-long Vikings fan from the great state of North Dakota. I've been a Viking fan dating back to 1980, I've been covering the Vikings for nearly a decade, and I founded Skoloholics in 2022. I work in real estate and property management, I love spending time with family, working in the yard, doing anything in the outdoors, and as you can tell from my username, I love fishing. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!
