It still feels good to be 5-1. Sitting atop the NFC North where we belong… and knowing that the packers are not… it is a pretty good feeling. I’ve never been good at predicting stock swings (or fantasy football, apparently, for that matter). I just shovel in my max for employer-sponsored retirement plans and dollar cost average a third of my paycheque every two weeks.
For the life of me I can’t understand why the mid term races are so close. There are obviously a lot of people better off today than in 2020…I am not one of those people.
I don’t like that in the short term but not sure what else you can do? Chase CEO says DJ goes down 20% more so we will see. But I just don’t know how many companies can be pulling profits to a level that they won’t layoff people.

Pt with history of pelvic surgery, presents with pain. CT shows a pelvic mass, hmm not sure what it is…could be a uterine mass, ovarian mass, mass of conglomerate nodes, possible colon cancer masquerading as diverticulitis. I give up.
ER NP calls. What do you think it is? Um, just what I said in my report…but doctor you are usually much more specific, what do you really think it is? Me….what I said in report.
Surgeon calls. Same conversation. What should we do next? Me…I’d do a laparascopic peek and shreek if you think acute upon review of labs and exam, if chronic refer to GYN/ONC maybe? Hmmm
Pelvic ultrasound ordered. Cut and paste the CT report. Repeat the conversation with the surgeon.
Pelvic MRI ordered. You just can’t imagine what I said! Shocking! The very same thing.
I’m sure the medical braintrust is scheming as I type for the next imaging study they could possible order. Perhaps I could biopsy it?

I say this in complete honesty, I really do not know nor is it easy to get that answer. Every insurer has their contractual adjustment for studies and then there is the CMS/Medicare/Medicaid rates and the fallback uninsured self pay cost. That particular MRI has a technical RVU of 11.2 approximately so I suppose the Medicare rate would be about $400? The professional component (what I make) is nothing profound.
I would like to know what the findings end up being on this case. Interesting. Sounds like a lower GI mass of some sort or ovarian.
I’ll let you know if we find out. Right now the patient and her family are mulling over doing anything more.

Got an update from my sister on our mother:
-still losing weight fast. Facility asked my sister to get her a nutritional supplement like Boost to augment her caloric intake. Stocked her fridge. Wasn’t drinking it – “too hard to open the bottles”. Staff opened a bottle twice a day for her. Stopped going down to eat as “I have the Boost now” so weight loss continues. Facility took away her supplements and told her she has to go down and eat.
-doctor said the antidepressant she is on is an appetite suppressant so is switching to one that is an appetite stimulant. Better living through chemistry.
-case manager has tried every means at her disposal to get her to agree to geriatric mental health assessment, finally told her yesterday she might win a trip to Disneyworld and she agreed (*not what the case manager actually said).
-complained that she can’t eat because teeth hurt. Doctor looks in mouth, gums inflamed, prescribes an oral antiseptic rinse and tells my sister she needs to go to dentist. Sister replies she was just at dentist a month ago and he prescribed two oral rinses but she won’t use it because it tastes bad. Staff are now doing the rinses as prescribed.
We are taking the step of having her ruled incompetent to make her own medical decisions but of course there is no way you can force feed someone if they don’t want to eat, no way to force someone to do a mental health assessment if they refuse to cooperate, etc.
I figure I have somewhere between 10 weeks and 10 years of having a living mother. I’ve made peace with that.

Thanks bow. Lately I’ve been thinking my mother’s father did the same thing (although he was diagnosed with Alzheimer dementia). I’m hoping that the dilution of the genes with 50% of my grandmother’s genes in mom (grandma was sharp as a tack until the lung cancer took her) and 50% of my dad’s genes in me (also sharp as a tack until the leukemia took him) gives me some protection. At least I have no biologic children to pass my shit brain DNA on to.

Sorry to hear that MT, that sucks and hope she can adjust better to her situation. It sounds an awful lot like my grandfather a couple years ago. He moved into assisted living because he couldn’t drive anymore, kept having falls even with his walker, he also couldn’t keep his blood sugar under control. Once he got to assisted living he quit eating, quit taking meds, quit using the toilet, etc. He said essentially that with no independence he didn’t see the point in anything in life and was just done, especially with his wife already gone, really sad but I kinda understood his perspective while also understood his kids being angry and upset about it. Sucks all around but hopefully things get better for you and yours.
Thanks benjammin. I’ve asked her multiple times what her wishes are and basically any time the conversation strays from what she wants to talk about she just shuts down. I’ve taken Kathy’s advice and just let her lead the convo and remind her of good memories. She claims she doesn’t want to die, just not hungry.
Hope that is helping, does she respond at all to the good memories (remember, we said not to expect it).
Sorry, MT. Just a heads up, I was the legal guardian for a mentally disabled sister (who also had lots of other physical medical problems, and this is the sister that the vax killed), I strongly recommend against becoming your Mom’s legal guardian.
I’m not saying it isn’t warranted, what I’m saying is it is a paperwork, bureaucratic nightmare. You will have to “authorize” via forms every little thing, you will get volumns of paper, including bills on every pill or whatever. In my sister’s case, it had to be done, and all my efforts did give her a much better quality of life (she didn’t push back on anything due to no ability to understand), but I’m not convinced it would really make much difference in your Mom’s situation.
You will also have to file regular reports to the court that granted the guardianship as well as other agencies, attend regular “plan of care” meetings, I could go on.
If you decide to do it anyway, my attorney gave me language to add to certain documents (not every document, just those involving financial stuff) that was something along the lines of, “in my role as legal guardian, not assuming any personal financial liability.”

My father, who divorced my mom 22 years ago, and swore he would never get married again, moved to Texas in 2002. Had 4 different live in girlfriends, and would never marry them. Also grew his own weed when he lived here. Moves to texas, and the women he dates are all against the devils lettuce so he goes back to booze. 2-3 bottles of wine per day the last 12 years or so. 3 years ago, his latest live in convinced him to get married. He already had memory issues and was warned to quit drinking. He had just lost his job since he showed up to work at the wrong time.
Dementia is a bitch, and so is his wife.
Last December she has a stroke. While she is in rehab, he goes missing three times. Cops called to retrieve him. Her family all live nearby, but they were more concerned for her rehab than my drunk dad. They kept calling us and telling us to go find him or move there to help.
They finally got an assessment and got him placed in a memory care facility.
We get a call in March (he had been there for 3 months) that he is being promiscuous and are we ok with that. We are, as long as it is consensual. Three days later we get another call saying he needs to be relocated since they cannot care for him and his hypersexual behavior. They up is meds from the 3 he had been on, to 10.
Sister goes to visit. The woman whos family complained tried to kiss my brother in law while he was there visiting. Unreal how understaffed that place was.
We found a place in MN and I went down and moved him here. Place has taken him off the 3 most dangerous drugs, and his behavior is fine. He needs to be redirected, not medicated.
Anyways, MT. I feel your pain.
My father thinks he is 90, and single still, and every time I go see him I remind him he is 83, and fit (except for melting his brain with booze). I leave the married part out, since I do not really care what happens to her.
Could easily be another 10 years. It is like having a child again. Rough.

Just pisses me off thinking of how many times I tried to have conversations about living wills. etc with my parents after seeing so many families deal with these things professionally, only to be blown off with the classic line, “We have everything taken care of so you will never need to worry about that.” Yeah, that was BS, there was nothing taken care of.
Makes me sad as they lived very frugally and I always hoped they would have a great time in their golden years. I for one don’t want a penny of inheritance. Hell, I would have been happy if a gold digger married her as long as he made her happy.
I got that same line from my dad for 20 years… “everything is taken care of”.
But it wasn’t. No will, in spite of me filling it out for him and only needing signatures. Steps got the properties and pretty much everything after he passed.
He hadn’t even done a thing to put in place his veteran’s burial wishes up here at Camp Ripley, even though I had gotten him the paperwork a decade ago. I had to do virtually everything concerning the hospital, hospice, funeral, yet I have 4 sisters and 5 steps who really didn’t lift a finger.
I am very familiar with the work to address situations like this basically falling on one person, while others do little to nothing. I always just try to do the right thing regardless.

My Father-in-law has just started having memory dementia issues…last Saturday he claims to have spent the entire afternoon visiting with his friend who has been dead for 8 years….I am guessing that is a bad sign.

College kids who care more about calculating when they get to take their break so they can catch up on social media. What 19-year-old wants to clean up someone who’s been incontinent of BM for $17/hour, when they can make that slinging french fries?
Then you throw in our wonderful govt, who keeps pulling funding away, forcing nursing homes to do more with less, and HMOs who pull the plug on paying for therapy services well before the patient is ready to return home, so the Nursing Assistants have to do more for them.
I’m very happy your parents never had to experience life in a nursing home, and I work in a nursing home. I’m doing everything I can to keep my parents out of one.
But, “treated like shit” is a bit unfair. A lot of these kids are doing as much as they can to keep up, but when dwindling govt reimbursement causes staffing shortages, and one CNA has to provide care for 10-12 residents because nobody else wants a job these days, personal cares suffer.

I have been charged many, many times. I would have zero trust in a can of pepper spray or a 6.5 Creedmoore. Fortunately all of the times I have been charged they have stopped outside of 20 feet, my magic number, and I have never had to shoot one.

You may remember last winter, I lost one of my best friends and my brother in a month. Friend at 76, healthy, fun, sharp, never any deterioration of any kind and just fell over dead one day. Lucky bastard.
Brother diagnosed w/stage 4 prostate cancer in May, left in February. I saw him several times the last month. Not what you ever want to see.

My mother either cries or yells at people everywhere she goes. Still has an ok mind but her emotions have always been out of control in my lifetime.
As a borderline syndromer, she likes causing a ruckus everywhere she goes, so I feel your pain in having to deal with the psychology of your mother.
I’m here in Minnesota to help deal with her, but could be a while before she goes and hangs with the really elderly in an advanced care home.
The downward aging spiral makes it harder, as new problems continually emerge.
Best of luck with her, LFA. It’s funny as in medical school I had a hard time understanding the personality disorders specifically Passive Aggressive (which is no longer classified as such) and borderline…my father was a textbook example of the former and my mother the latter. Which is not to say I don’t have my own share of some of that thanks to being raised in a super fun household.

My folks are doing great currently, but I watched my grandma deteriorate to the point she didn’t recognize her own kids, and her confusion made her emotional and angry and stubborn. Unfortunately my mom has exhibited some traits that appear very similar to what we started seeing with grandma several years ago. I’m very fearful.

They made a comeback versus a Detroit team that suffered a ton of injuries during the game. They squeaked by the Saints even though New Orleans was missing its starting quarterback, running back, and top receiver. They also couldn’t generate any offense in the second half against the Bears, save for the final drive. And the cherry on top was that ridiculous Miami game in which the Dolphins legitimately outgained the Vikings by 224 yards.

paid $1400 for a season pass, and had over 4k worth of tee times and range balls (retail).
Golfed 2-3 times per week unless it was raining or super cold.
Wife and I did not go out to any restaurants or do anything else but golf this summer. probably doing that again next season.
