Game Discussion
Wow, what a game! The Minnesota Vikings overcame a 17-point deficit, and beat one of the best teams in the NFL on their home turf. The Vikings are now 9-1, and earned a ton of respect from the NFL. Some had dismissed the Vikings as an imposter since they hadn’t beaten any tough teams. Well, the Vikings put that talk to rest yesterday.
Cousins wasn’t on his A game yesterday, but this is a team game. He also drove the Vikings down the field when they needed it, and he made some clutch throws throughout the game. The Vikings overcame mistakes, and never gave up. After a roller coaster ride in the 4th quarter and overtime, they left Buffalo with a win. The defense wasn’t able to stop anything in the first half, giving up 24 points in the half. The second half was a different story. They held the Bills to only 6 points in the second half, and they got some crucial stops so that their offense could go do their thing. Patrick Peterson made two interceptions in the end zone. One of them being the interception that put the game away.
Watching this game, you saw that Stefon Diggs is a great receiver, among the best in the NFL. You also saw that Justin Jefferson is even better. JJ is already among the best receivers in the NFL, and by the time his career is over, may be one of the best of all-time. That catch he made on 4th and 18 might be on the list of greatest catches of all time. Dalvin Cook is also a beast, he broke an 80 yard touchdown that seemed to ignite the Vikings, and was the beginning of a miraculous comeback. The O-line looked much better than they did last week against a stout Bills pass rush.

Greg Joseph missed ANOTHER crucial PAT. I doubt they’re going to find an upgrade at this point in the season, as anyone who is available at the moment will be flawed, so I doubt we’ll see the Vikings make a change. Get the guy a sports psychologist if you can’t find an upgrade.
Summary
In the end, your Minnesota Vikings are 8-1 (hey five, you might as well get ready to send me those cigars…..AGAIN), and have placed themselves among the best teams in the NFL. What a great game, what a great team, and what a great year. SKOL!!!!!!!!

I learned that you can’t keep an Acadia parked for more than 2 weeks. Years ago, my wife had a 2008 Acadia. She was in the hospital with our critter for long periods back then. Went to move her car out one day after it had been sitting a few weeks, and it wouldn’t start. Mechanic buddy of mine told me that the newer cars have so much running off of electronics, even when not used, that it’ll drain the battery in a couple weeks.
Did that back in the day. An overnight with the door open, so interior light on, will drain the battery. It just will need a jump start and be fine.

Not sure I agree with this conclusion. DVO has some flaws in its mindset. For example, running several times on 1st & 10 and gaining minimal yardage, in order to set up the play action when you really need it. My gripe with DVOA is that it is an over-statistical approach to the game, when the nuances of a game, dictate strategy, execution and outcomes. DVOA only cares about the outcomes in terms of ‘yards games in that situation”. DVOA also ignores one very important statistic….who wins the game

And yet NFL teams are not machines that follow a certain set law. Lots of mental, emotional, and developmental changes occur throughout a long season. This is what analytics struggles to figure out. In the end, they’re 8-1 and gaining momentum.
I don’t disagree. There’s plenty to be said about the non-quantifiable attributes of football.
But everyone craves analysis and most are happy to settle for whichever metrics present their favorite team in a positive light. Better analytics is possible, and is happening already.
When you win close games, your DVOA is going to look worse then your record.
The folks at FO would tell you we can’t sustain this.
I think they worry too much about yards in some of their calculations and ignore that our offense is 8th in points scored and our defense is 14th.
As has been pointed out, we could have easily lost about half of the games.
Plus, I doubt FO likes the fact our defense runs on bend/don’t break and is 29th in yards/game.

but yardage earned fluctuates less game-to-game (when adjusting for opponent) than scoring, so it’s a better single variable metric, which is why it’s leaned on more heavily than scoring

I’ve said before that I was really jealous of teams that have a stud TE. Finally, we might have one of our own! Have to give credit to the new regime for being able to add an affordable keeper this late into the season.
I’m very interested to see what happens if/when Hockenson gets taken away by opposing defenses. More targets for Thielen/Osborn? Maybe more running plays with Hock blocking?
Can’t double team everyone. Too early to know if Hock will end up in that very top tier of TE’s, but he’s at a minimum very good, so maybe.
Massive upgrade over what we were getting from that position, and I think he’ll only get better as he logs more time in the offense.
Agree! BTW, that block from Dalvin Cook toward the end of the game was amazing. In the handful of Vikings games we got here before yesterday, I don’t remember that from him.
I’m not a huge fan of Cook as a player (I was, and he’s still quite good but I’m not a fan of giving a lot of money to RBs, just keep running rookie contract guys), but he strikes me as being especially motivated this year, which I’m happy to see.
I would be happy to move on from Cook in the offseason, draft Mo Ibrahim, and go cheap at the position.
I get the local angle, but I’m not locked in on him.

Hockenson is difficult to evaluate. I think he was overdrafted at 8th overall, but has slightly underperformed due to being a Lion, so this half season with the Vikings should show us what he’s capable of on a decent team.

I was home alone with thing one and thing 2 all weekend as mrs. benjammin had military training. We watched a bunch of stuff, inluding Coco, Encanto (both elite Disney movies IMO), Spidey and his amazing friends, as well as Gabby’s Dollhouse, which is by far the worst ever, and Vampirina, which I can tolerate. It was a long weekend.
Kiddo and I watched a lot of shows, too. It was a fun weekend.
Ours was fun but I didn’t get to watch the game live, wanted to watch it later on the game pass thing without knowing the outcome but someone told me about it before I could.
I’m notorious in the office for whistling Christmas songs in the middle of summer.
Yeah, I was scrolling through radio stations and was kind of surprised that Kool108 is already on the Christmas music plan. I guess that started November 1. A bit early for me, but with the snow falling I agree that it helps the pain of incoming winter.
I like snow until about mid January. Then I just want to go south.
