Man what a shitshow this morning.

I get an invite late Monday evening to a Teams meeting at 0630 today with the partially elected body that oversees the clinical side of things at my job. Trying not to get tl;dr there were prior email attachments to the invite that set my uneasy. I fired off a reply asking for some background on it all, heard back from one of my remote partners in Bozeman that she didn’t know but had asked for us (regional) types to be included. I then sent off an email saying that this whole thing was a massive breakdown in communication, why would asswipe A be invited to speak about asswipe B (me) without inviting me in the first place? Got a few phone calls from leadership explaining the invite was poorly worded, probably not about me at all but would love to have you participate.

Meeting starts. I gather from what I heard later some garishly worded email had been sent out by A a couple of weeks ago, whining how the regional asswipes were strangling the big city group out of gold doubloons. So the master of ceremonies says there is some miscommunication, glad you could all be here, let’s introduce ourselves (the big city group was in the board room in person).

A proceeds on a twenty five minute monologue introducing every single rad and their role including me. Starts to complain about how he’s been dealt a shitty hand and then moves on to describe how asswipe B:
-worked out his own deal behind his back
-has no morals
-left the group in desperate situation
-has a glorious lifestyle with no call or weekend work
-refused to work with the main group at a compromise
-was “voluntarily” given several sites to read from “temporarily” but apparently won’t give them back
-forced the other regional asswipes to join him in his fortress of solitude while gleefully flipping the bird to the rest.

Needless to say I weighed in and was supported by the regional team who have mountains of documentation on how it went down in addition to my own extensive documentation.

The thing I almost wanted to laugh about was that I wasn’t included in the original invite on November 7. How sweet to think I would be ground under the tire of public scrutiny without being invited.

It’s insane. BTW I never got to introduce myself. A was flat out lying making this story sound incredibly dramatic and I’m getting texts from CEO, CFO, COO, chief of staff, regional coordinator like WTF?!? and I’m like I gotta jump in here. The MOC tried to say well let’s move on to the present problem and I cut her off nopenopenope I’m jumping in here.

Dallas is a solid team. We could easily lose this game. I also don’t like our chances playing a night game in Primetime on Thanksgiving. maybe Kirk can turn the corner, but his MNF game against the Eagles had 3 RZ INTs IIRC.
Kirk’s melt downs cost us big that game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we lost the next two games.

I don’t count 4:25 as a night game personally.

Technically we could lose any game as this team plays up or down to the level of the competition because they’re balanced and effective not dominate and explosive.

I like us to beat the Cowboys straight up personally. We’re a bad matchup with what they don’t defend well.

Yeah. I didn’t mean to imply it was a done deal. Just waiting for us to have a small hiccup. Don’t tell Pete, but his DVOA is not entirely made up garbage like I have been implying, and the Vikings are due for some regression IMO. I’ll distract Pete with a sexy pic below and he won’t even see this. {Insert BSF evil laugh}

I’m going to challenge the regression back to the mean crowds take. I think this team hasn’t been overachieving, I think they’ve been prepared, well coached and executing on a level they’re capable of being successful at.

The proof of that is being down 10-27 in the 3rd qtr to a top team on the road. Top team thought it was in the bag and the Vikings stuck to their plan kept executing and put themselves in a position to win. Wasn’t that the Bills lost the game, it that the Vikings didn’t quit and gave themselves a chance to win.

Big Stupid Face
Reply to  Lifer

I’m probably 60-40 right now.
60% with your take and 40% with the regression crowd. I’ve been arguing for the non-regression just because I really like to argue, but I’m not fully convinced that is correct.
I think we will end up at 13-4. Probably with a loss to Dallas coming up.
Hope I’m wrong though.

I’m thinking 12-5, so we’re really similar.

Either we lose to Dallas and the Jets, or we lose one of those and a game we ought to win (Lions/Colts/Giants/Bears).

home DAL [L]  8-2 [Cowboys   #4  - off #11, def #4 ]
home NEP [L]  8-3 [Patriots  #12 - off #25, def #3 ]
home NYJ [L]  8-4 [Jets ...  #9  - off #19, def #6 ]
away DET [W]  9-4 [Lions ..  #19 - off #13, def #26]
home IND [W] 10-4 [Colts ..  #31 - off #32, def #11]
home NYG [W] 11-4 [Giants .  #20 - off #15, def #24]
away GBP [L] 11-5 [Packers   #14 - off #9 , def #17]
away CHI [W] 12-5 [Bears ..  #26 - off #20, def #29]

peterplaysbass

I think that view is more easily defended in some ways than “they’ll go 1-2 over the next three and inexplicably lose to the Colts”

It’s true that the next three games happen to be three in a row, and at home, but all three teams are good enough to beat the Vikings without needing much luck, IMO.

@ Chicago is a losable game by the way, even if we’re not resting starters.

So yeah, I see 4 losses remaining, but lots of different ways for it to happen. My table above is very simply “lose to better teams, beat worse teams”

That might be historically somewhat corollary but not anymore. Printing money at previously unseen levels with no standard to back it up is going to lead to atrocious lives soon. The stock market is going to continue to get killed in all ways. Now, burying your entire energy sector, making 3 major states socialist ran (all are in massive massive trouble) is a disaster in all ways. Also, the top 3 out migration states. Van update.

i removed battery. brought it to autozone, got new battery. got yelled at by autozone idiot employee yelled at me for where i put the core battery. which was on a table RIGHT NEXT TO THE BATTERIES AND WHERE I WAS GETTING RUNG UP.

came home. installed battery (easiest thing to do for a vehicle IMO)

kids thought i was a god for fixing the van and making it run again. wife, less impressed but thankful.

sat the kids down, had a serious discussion of how we need to be respectful of EVERYTHING we have and not just leave things laying around and losing thing.
hopefully it hit home.

Having exchanged many a battery I know the drill. I come in the front door looking rather winded carrying the lead core battery…make eye contact with one of the salesmen…they will tell you where to put it down. NEVER put it some place convenient.

Had to change the battery in my Lexus LS460 last week. That thing eats batteries, I had it on a trickle charger not even a month before but it went dead dead dead, second time the battery died and they just don’t come back from that. Exactly 48 months since I installed the Interstate battery, which has a 42 month warranty from Costco.

It’s a tossup which is the harder battery to change out, that one or the one in the BMW M3 I used to own as a midlife crisis. Lexus buries them under plastic shields and it is right next to the hood hinge.

F150’s or the Ranger I can change out in three minutes.

Found out my wife had borrowed one of my flat head screwdrivers to scrape some rust. She got a spanking.

I get these surveys once in a while from Nielsen, they give me a gift certificate for $15 so of course I fill them out. One of them had me put all sorts of odd particulars in about my house, how long I owned, when I graduated, etc and the last question was how much do you owe on the house? Answer zero. Next question – who has the mortgage – no one. Next question – you have no debt on your home. Next question are you sure you own the home free and clear. End of questionnaire.

IT will be worse for the more expensive homes…but those under 300k won’t take as big of a hit because of how it compares to what people are paying to rent.

You want to pay 2k/mo for a mortgage or to rent? Not a hard one to figure out.

300k house with 3.5% down on an FHA you’re just shy of 2400/mo.

Look at what it costs to rent a 3/4bd in a decent hood in MN.

Those houses won’t lose value…if anything they’ll sustain.

We have a 4 bed, 3 bath we bought 5 years ago in a nice neighborhood and only paid $185,000. I could have sold my house over night a few months ago for $350,000. It’s a nice house but was built in the 50s. No way these houses are worth what they are selling them for. It can’t be sustainable.

a lot of factors play into it.

In duluth there are something like 7 colleges within 20 miles.

Throw in 2 hospitals and you have a huge need for rentals.

Single families get bought up for rental properties and it creates an imbalance.

2k+ a month for rent… or mortgage… you chooose.

either way the demand for housing in duluth is real.

They are 7-0 this year so they were 12-12 from the previous 2.

Does that mean we lose 7 in a row 1 score games to be at .500?

I just hear all the time that X team is winning because of Y and that is unsustainable.

Kinda like Philly and TO differential… Who knows though.

My point is…this core group of this team has played in a ton of 1 score high pressure games.

Maybe the past 2 seasons are starting to pay dividends this year.

peterplaysbass
Reply to  Mick
16 November 2022 9:14 am

I don’t think we’ll lose the next 7 1-score games, but as you noted, we were 12-12 from the previous 2 years. perhaps we’ll be within a couple/few games of something like 20-20 by the end of next season. Not sure exactly how it would happen, but it’s an observable phenomenon: W/L record in one-score games tends to regress to the mean.

It’s a great preseason bet – over/under for teams’ records for an entire season – just look at the record in one-score games from the previous season. The teams with the worst record in such games? vote the over. And vice versa.

Last year we went 7-7 and the previous year it was 5-5.

Mean says .500 but the good teams WIN those games more than they lose.

The 2 previous seasons nobody confused us with a “good” team.

My point is…I think that it is finally starting to payoff playing in those high stress game on the line situations that this team knows what they are doing.

the “five fewer games” part is suspicious to me. Is he calculating missed time for Moss in his first 3 seasons? Did Moss miss time?

3 season was 48 games when Moss was playing. Now it’s 51 – three more.

Vikings have played 9 games to far this year, so add that to 17 for last year and another 17 for the year before and that’s 43.

The game this week will be the 44th regular season game since Jefferson joined the team, meaning if JJ gets 88+ yards, he’ll have passed Moss in four fewer games, right?

When I get put in an old folk’s home, ideally, I will keep myself entertained by creating missions for myself: sneaking out of my room, infiltrate the kitchen and obtain a pudding cup, for example.

Climbing out the window and going to a store for illicit treats could also be a mission.

More and more is being learned about gut health and how it relates to so many other ailments in the body.

Its also the reason something like ivermectin…when people have taken it for the vid have cured decades long issues they have had. A Lot of people have a parasite issue they know nothing about and the ivermectin takes care of it.

Korsakoff’s syndrome is a disorder that primarily affects the memory system in the brain. It usually results from a deficiency of thiamine (vitamin B1), which may be caused by alcohol abuse, dietary deficiencies, prolonged vomiting, eating disorders, or the effects of chemotherapy.
Most patients first develop a delirium, marked by confabulation, gait disorder and problems with memory and disorientation (that is usually called a Wernicke’s encephalopathy). When this delirium clears, a profound disorder of memory remains. Patients have great difficulty learning and retaining new information as well as problems recalling memories from the recent past.

Long story short – if you drink, take B1 supplements.

Had an aunt who’s son told her if she doesn’t stop he won’t see her again. She didn’t stop and died. I talked a little on another post below but my ex-wife was a ridiculous alcoholic and violent at that. She finally got clean in rehab once she hit rock bottom and I was filing for divorce, she lost her job etc… up until that point I kept everything in our lives together for the both of us. She had drank herself into two seizures but through all these hospital stays and mental health in-patient stays always refused actual rehab and getting actually clean until it was too late and I had enough, she woke up from a literal drunken fog with no husband, house, or job. I went through about 5 years of hell man. She’s lucky I was nice enough to keep her ass on my insurance until we were legally divorced and that paid for a lot of medical bills.

Imagine working 5 am – 3 pm, going home, sit in recliner and drink. Pass out in recliner. get up at around 1-2 am and go to bed and sleep for two hours. then wake up and do that again.

But I mean we are learning the same thing with weed. Some people shouldn’t smoke. I have a low tolerance for weed and if I over due it I have a VERY bad time lol. My ex on other hand. Boy I loved it when she was high and not drinking. Never an issue. Just happy go lucky lol.

Thanks, it’s my understanding she is. I hope she is and stays healthy but I can’t ever be around her again. I don’t wish her ill at all, hope she has a great rest of her life. At first they said she’d need a liver transplant in her 30s because it was so destroyed. Luckily being in her mid 30s it regenerated and she’s doing OK as far as I know. Thing is if she ever drinks again it’ll probably just kill her. I still talk to her brother and dad (big Viking’s fans) because her whole family was supportive of me getting a divorce. They knew only a little of the hell she put me through but how bad is that that her whole family basically were like, “yeah we get it.” lol.

Didn’t get half my shit at all. South Dakota isn’t a 50/50 state. We had 2 cars, she got the older shitty one because there’s no way she could pay for the one we still owed on, I got the house, she took all her medical and student debt she had left (my school loans were paid off), I have a shit ton of music gear and she just asked for the one acoustic guitar and I was like fine.

While she was in rehab and living with her folks across the state, I packed up all her shit and hid the things I didn’t want her to even think about taking (music gear) at friend’s houses lol.

I told her I made this divorce under the ground of irreconcilable differences but I could have used grounds for divorce under Habitual intemperance and if she wanted to fight me I had literally hours and hours of video on my phone of her being a violent drunk towards me that I would use as evidence. I was fucking done haha.

Sweet! I am the roadie for the people in my bands who actually own all that stuff, very happy to just bring an instrument and a music stand.

Edgecrusher71

I’d say bass is one of the easier instruments to START on. By that I mean you can fumble through songs you like playing quicker on bass than piano and guitar. BUT it is just as hard as any instrument to get actually good at and fill the space with good sonic dictation and adding that foundation bottom end to a song is VITAL. So yes, try bass but you have to have dexterity on bass as well if you want to do more than just play the bass note/basic rhythm.

I agree. I can’t believe states like MN that are a 50/50 state. I have a buddy who got divorced, has a new girlfriend and she can’t get divorced. Her well technically current husband has racked up hundreds of thousands maybe million and if they get divorced the court system just goes, you both get half of all assets and debts no matter who’s responsible. At least SD takes into consideration who’s responsible for what. Like my ex and all her student debt like she was 2 classes away from her master’s which should have taken 2 years tops she was going on 3-4 years because of the drinking. So both attorney’s agreed that was her debt. The last thing she ever did right by me is not fighting me on this shit, she knew it was her fault.

we gave up a 2nd and 4th for their 3rd and 4th and Hockenson – given where they typically draft (and where we do) the draft pick value chart math suggests it’s the equivalent of a 2nd round pick for Hock straight up

I have a secret. I have been watching football since 1983, and I still don’t know what DVOA means…

The initials themselves make me think of divas and dead on arrival acronyms. Maybe that is why I avoid learning. Nothing but bad connotations in my brain.

LOL, I don’t think DVOA has been around that long (they’re retroactively grading old seasons)

it stands for Defense-adjusted Value Over Average (think of “defense-adjusted” as “adjusted for the quality of the opponent”)

grading each play against the baseline expected value given context (down and distance, game clock, time outs remaining, field surface, weather, etc)

Ah, sometimes at night when I can’t sleep, and I think of dumb things, I think, someone should make a stat in football where, at the end of the year, they ignore every game against an opponent with a losing record and only count stats for wins against winning teams.

If a QB throws for 500 yards and 6 TDs against the Lions, who really cares in the long run? It is the Lions.

Is DVOA kind of like that then?

peterplaysbass

teams still get credit for yards and TDs against opponents like the Lions, but they get less credit.

think of it like this:

getting 350 passing yards against the worst pass defense in the league is still impressive, but is it more impressive than getting 300 passing yards against the best passing defense in the league?

if not, then adjustments are a good thing

I don’t think coaching directly factors in – only whatever actual effect it has on the field.

Dallas is currently rated the second most efficient team in the NFC. Defense is ranked #2 in the league, and special teams is ranked #3. Offense is only 12th, but their run game is very good. Pass game needs more discipline, especially route running IMO, and they’ll be a very dangerous team.

the missed XP/FG is the biggest problem. Everything else is average or better, with the exception of punt returns, which are below average, but not horrendous. Reagor has muffed a couple (recovered both, but fumble recovery is seen more as luck than skill and doesn’t factor in as heavily as the fumbles themselves).

But I think its time I made a real list of the best teams in the league. Anyone else want to play?

I’m just going to break them into tiers

  1. Eagles, Bills and Chiefs
  2. Ravens, Vikings, Cowboys & Dolphins
  3. Niners Seahawks Jets and Giants
  4. TB, Titans, NE
  5. scrubland

I know you just ranked them by DVOA, but do you honestly believe the Packers are a better team then the Vikings and Giants?

Let me remind you that both of those teams beat the Packers.

peterplaysbass
Reply to  Big Stupid Face
16 November 2022 9:29 am

not only is it possible for inferior teams to beat superior teams, but it happens often

the Colts beat the Chiefs
the Pronouns beat the Eagles
the Jets beat the Bills
the Panthers beat the Buccaneers

do you honestly believe the Packers are a better team then the Vikings and Giants?

I have reasons to suspect so. The Packer run offense is better, and they’ve had a more difficult schedule so far. They’ve been more inconsistent in their performances, but their ceiling has been higher so far.

That said, the teams are pretty close. They’re both figuring some stuff out and improving, as well.

Giants seem to be slumping to me. Their defense is bad and they’ve had an easier schedule than the Vikings and Packers.

I think if the current version of the Packers played the Vikings 20 times at a neutral field, they’d get 11 or 12 wins. If the Packers played the Giants 20 times, they’d have 13 or 14 wins.

The order of the Vikings’ opponents has been extremely helpful this year. Getting all the divisional home games early and divisional road games late is proving quite nice.

They Vikings have yet to lose a game they should win, but you know it’s going to happen this year. 8-1 is great, but 12-5 is still the ceiling record this year IMO

Big Stupid Face
Reply to  peterplaysbass
16 November 2022 10:12 am

My issue with calling the Packers better than the Vikings is more than just the fact that we beat them 23-7 in week 1.
Packers have won 4 games.

27-10 Bears
14-12 TB
27-24 NE
31-28 Dallas

3 of there wins are by 3 points or less. This is by an even lower average score than the Vikings . If our wins aren’t sustainable, what does this tell you?

What about games against common opponents?

We both beat the Bears at home.

Pack lost to the Bills, Commies, and Lions.

I get that you could say any giving Sunday an inferior Vikings team lost to the Packers.

But statistically what are the odds that a better team would lose to 3 teams we beat?

Not very good.

You care a lot about DVOA. What stats do you have about improving DVOA throughout a season, as well as DVOA of Super Bowl participants and winners?

peterplaysbass
Reply to  manly-purple
16 November 2022 11:10 am

I don’t have anything prepared, but I’ve generally read that SB participants have dramatically low or high DVOA values some years when compared to most. Also, there is something to be said about teams “getting hot” late in the season.

At a certain point they start discounting the weight of the earliest games as a team in week 12 is different than the same team in week 4, and if they’re better or worse lately, then that should be reflected appropriately.

I think most fans recognize that sometimes (often) the 2 best teams aren’t in the SB. DVOA, if you put any weight in it, can pin down just how true this is.

I’m trying to look up the 2009 season’s NFCCG by DVOA to see

I had one. But real outdoorsmen all have trucks. My buddy put an elk in his tahoe and could not get the smell out

How about those little Soobaroo pickups in the 70’s?

I mean, they continually shed weight by losing their floorboards, etc.

Yeah, where we get ours there are far too many trees. Those mountains need a good fire that I hope your brother’s place survives.

yeah, I don’t think Christmas trees are a concern. Remember when everyone was freaking out about paper usage and cutting down trees in the 90s?

flash drives and the internet fixed that problem right quick. didn’t even take enormously expensive legislation from the overlords.

Yup…

And if you have some extra acerage you can plant some pines on it and get a tax credit for a “tree farm”

unless you own all the farmland like bill gates who refuses to plant a single tree to reduce co2. hmmmm…..

The last real tree I got was in California, where we went and got a permit so we could go into the state forest and lop down a real tree.

It was a beaut, but we had to walk a mile in a foot and a half of snow to find one, then when we got back my buddy’s truck got stuck.

Was all about real trees until we had children. The cost is silly. I spent around $700 on a prelit tree during an after christmas sale at Gertens, and with what a real tree costs we are way ahead.

While I like real trees, I am moving towards the lowest possible amount of work as I age.

I hear ya. At 41 I’m happy to put up with real trees for a while longer. Youngest kid is 12 right now, so I ought to be able to last at least until the kids have all moved out.

Our tree goes up this weekend. We need the Christmas tree up so we can take the family photo for Christmas cards on Thanksgiving, or whatever day the ungrateful children show up.

Flat earthers are great. In today’s world where you have a crazy amount of data at your fingertips we get people like this.
Then in WW1, some German artillary man who predated antibiotics and would have been lucky to know what a virus was, would adjust long range projectiles for the earths rotation and curvature.
What a time to be alive

Spider-Man was always my guy, but I did read GI Joe comics back in the day. Larry Hama was a fun comic book writer. Totally understood the adolescent boy mindset with his storytelling.
