Today is Veteran’s Day, a federal holiday for honoring military veterans of the United States Armed Forces. Without our veterans, we would not have the freedom that we far too often take for granted. So, if you happen to see a veteran today, take a moment to thank them for their service. Honestly, this is something we should do every day, or at least every time we get the opportunity. If it isn’t something you do, today is a perfect day to start. Hoo-ah!
Just two more days until the Vikings biggest games of the season thus far. This game against the Bills will be a huge test for this young team with their new regime and new attitude. This will be a big test for Kirk, as Buffalo’s coverage and passing defense is very stout. The Bills’ run defense is not bad, but is not as strong as their pass defense, so we may see a LOT of Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison, especially if they have luck running early. To be honest, this game could go any direction. There’s obviously no reason for over-confidence, but there is also no reason for doom. I’m going in with tempered expectations, but also with optimism. Just win, baby. SKOL!!!!!!!!!!

I shot an M60 when I was 12 at Camp Ripley way back in the back 40 machine gun range. Normally Dad was at the artillery range, but he let me go back with him to bang bang a few rounds.

I damn near pissed myself yesterday. I waited too long while I was outside clearing snow in -7 air temps, realized I was going to just have to do my business in the snow. Unzipped my jacket then tried to unzip the overalls but the zipper got stuck. By then my 53 year old bladder had decided that the time was now. I’m hopping around shedding gloves and jacket trying to pull the overalls down. Even though it was freezing cold it was a relief to get them pulled down and stand there half naked emptying my bladder.

So (cue Johnny Cash) I’ve driven on icy and snowy highways all over this continent but had a first on Tuesday. We woke up at the hotel in Billings, a decent snowfall was coming down. Roads were shite in town, ran to a couple of the big box stores and then headed east back to paradise. I-94 was unpleasant, about Pompey’s Pillar snow is blowing like crazy, the road is completely snow covered and icy. I come up behind a Subaru going about 20, after a minute or so decide to pass as even though conditions were bad 20 was too slow, I worried I would get a semitrailer rearending me. As I pull into the passing lane on a straight section, I realize there is another car in front of the Subie, in fact it was a HP going 20 mph. Right after I get past him and pull back into the driving lane we go by an older car, like about a 74 Plymouth Fury, spun into the ditch with his front and rear bumpers in the banks of the ditch, wheels suspended in the air. HP pulls over, fires up his lights.
Here is where it gets interesting, that area is hilly and twisty between Pompey’s and Custer. I’m about to pass yet another slow moving car when I spot a dark object through the whiteout in the passing lane. I stay back and am amazed to see a man crouched down in the passing lane with two suitcases at his feet, looks like he is unpacking his suitcase. The car in front of me and I go by this guy, I make eye contact with him all of five feet from my side window. Immediately call 911 and report, dispatcher said yeah we got a call already I sent an officer, I said is that the officer that just pulled over for a ditched car two miles back …. pause … shoot yeah we’ll get someone there as soon as possible. That explains why the HP was driving slow, he was looking for the guy.

Thinking of you, Brad, I hear Bismarck got 17 inches of snow. We got about 7 but there was a base of freezing rain under it so travel was not advised yesterday, I worked from my command center at home.

No but I did annoy my back. Wednesday when the freezing rain started I decided to move my sandbags from the shipping container to the back of my little Ranger, so I stacked the fifty pounders outside on the ground then brought the bucket on the tractor over. Somehow the bags were stuck together by the freezing rain so I had to lift four sets of two bags stuck together and as I don’t lift like Chuck that sucked. Yesterday morning I started trying to move the snow with the only shovel I had at hand, a 48 inch plastic pusher, and that wasn’t going to happen. Like a dumbass, as I didn’t use the snowblower last year I had stored it in the very back of the 40 foot shipping container, with the riding mower (empty of gas and battery pulled), ladders, bikes, etc between the blower and the door. So what could I do but pick that single stage Toro up and put it on my shoulder and clamber over all the “deadfall” to get to the door. Back didn’t like that, oh not one little bit. After I cleared the snow off the driveways my wife told me the road report so just sat in my chair all day with a heating pad on my low back.
I hate it when my stuff is buried and I’ve got to go digging (or make due with an inferior option)

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and prayers for my wife…as you might know from my brief comment on Tuesday her surgery was postponed, now set for December 7. So would very much appreciate your thoughts and prayers on that day.
I have to add my little anecdote…Monday morning we were getting ready to drive up to Billings for preop testing and my wife threw not one but three winter coats in the back of the pickup. Now I am the overpacker in the family and she often says things like “you don’t need a raincoat and a jacket just take the jacket”. So I said, “you don’t need three jackets, two maybe but put that one back”. I got the “I can feel your total lack of compassion, you’re such a dick, you should hear yourself”. Kinda awkward silence for the first thirty minutes of the drive. At that point someone we know called, as it turns out she had had the exact same surgery two weeks ago so was talking my missus off the ledge. She dropped that her daughter had accompanied her to Billings as she was more empathetic and less likely to burst into tears than her husband. When she got off the phone I said oh so maybe your daughter could…”DON”T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT”. Heh heh.

I have those moments with my wife too. Its usually when she is freaking out about something that has gone wrong or is going wrong. There are 3 options, empathize and say something “wow that’s a tough sucky situation what are you going to do?”, try to solve the problem (which is my first instinct), or wait for her to tell me if she just wanted me to listen and doesn’t need feedback or empathy, just someone to vent too. Literally no matter what I choose the wrong option and she gets pissed because I’M JUST SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT SHE WANTS ALWAYS.

Today is a day I always think of my grandfather. He died before I was born, but I know him through stories. He was on an aircraft carrier that was hit by a kamikaze. He lifted something heavy off of a fellow soldier that day, and lived with back pain for the rest of his life.
Stayed faithful to his wife until his death, and helped raise 4 boys. Worked for 3M and owned his own machine shop, working 2 jobs for many, many years. He enjoyed outdoor hockey in the winter in St Paul during his free time. He was a good man, and I’m looking forward to meeting him someday.

Is your wife going to use it? If your wife is a big factor, you might want to look at a revolver. They are simple and easy. S&W, Taurus, Ruger, Colt, doesn’t matter that much. It’s more about how much you want to spend.

Glock 19 is probably not best if wife is involved. It depends on the woman, though. Some have trouble racking slides.
My wife has a S&W MP .380 EZ because it is made to rack easy. (Never uses it, though).

Yeah my wife cant do the slide, but i have it set up wear she just has put the cartridge in and click the slide switch. Then shes got 16 rounds to shoot in an emergency
Yup, first a shotgun, then a revolver, if you haven’t used a handgun much before. Learning curve is a bit steeper on a semi-auto.

I third that.G19 is at my bedside. I do most of my target shooting with a G17, so the knobology is identical.

Walthers have very nice ergonomics. I thought that too when I got my 99 AS. I still haven’t shot it, though. I honestly don’t know if I will. It has never been shot, and they don’t make them anymore.
I use my Glock all the time. I’m not going to sing praises of its grip or trigger, but all it does is always work no matter what. That thing eats any ammo I put in it without complaint.
I put the biggest grips on my G. If I used the ones that were mounted on it from the factory would be way too small.

My Walther came with them, as well. I’d be curious to see what that feels like with the larger backstraps.
I recommend a 12 gauge shotgun. You don’t need great aim, and the ammo isn’t likely to go through walls and hurt people in other rooms.

Remington was mostly a bankruptcy situation, so they got the ammo part of Remington pretty cheep.
Idiots ran Remington, were playing far too many financial and political games, but I think Federal will do better with them now, although I’m not a fan of Federal’s higher prices.

Waterfowl I tend to use Winchester drylock. If I’m feeling cheap I’ll buy a box of Kent shells.
Pheasant I’ll buy Fiocchi Golden Pheasant since its reasonable price and they get the job done.
I’ve used the Federal Prairie Storm and haven’t noticed any great improvements over the more budget friendly rounds.
I couldn’t tell you the differences, honestly. I just picked Federal and remain loyal.

sawed-off increases the spread, making it more likely for SOME of the spread to hit them but also more likely for some of the spread to miss.
With more limited spread the odds of hitting your target with every bit of it are better

Not much- get a revolver or plan on spending a lot of time on the range.
Some- Are you going to CC? I you may want a compact gun. FYI: Some compact guns suck to shoot. Less accurate and the grip can dig in on some models.

Get a shotgun with around a 20″ barrel.
Mossberg makes models that range from around $200 bucks up to around a Grand.
One shot of 00 buck puts out 9 pellets that are roughly = to 9 mm rounds.
I keep some Heavi shot home defense around. They also make a shell called dead coyote that has more bang.
IMO: get a shotgun. Mossberg or similar with a 20″ barrel and then figure out if you want to use something like #4 shot or 00 buck.
At my tactical shooting course the instructor (retired SEAL) had us do an exercise, darken a room and try moving through it with a shotgun and then a handgun. The point being to do the same in your own home, try moving through your home crouching and using cover at night. You’ll find that the barrel of the shotgun impedes your movement. Buck shot will also go through dry wall like a hot knife through butter. Plus you have the advantage that you can put out three shot groups on five targets with a 9mm and still have a couple of rounds to spare. No doubt a center of mass shot with 12 gauge buck shot will take the target down in a few seconds. It’s the ability to crouch in cover and take a shot with minimal exposure that makes a pistol preferable for me.

That makes sense. I think many of the home defense shotguns have 18-22″ barrels and are made with clearing rooms in mind, but I don’t have any real life experience doing it.
My shotguns are all 28″ barrels, which would be a pain in the ass to use in tight quarters.
