Only a few more days until the Vikings’ next matchup, as they travel to Chicago to take on the Bears on Sunday. It’s a little different this week for fans as the team is going into a game that basically means nothing. The team obviously wants to win the game and go into the playoffs with some positive momentum, and rid themselves of the stench from the Packers game. I think that KOC should use the game as a means of getting reps to the guys who need them, get the offensive line situated, and hopefully get win number 13. We’ll find out in a few short days!

I was thinking about how those guys really have to be “on” for the entire time every single game day. I could imagine it would be pretty easy to get into a routine where you’re never thinking you’d have to use most of that training outside of concussion checks and not really be prepared for someone needing CPR or other life saving treatment.

I don’t really use a recipe in this case. I just throw in beef, potatoes, carrots, onion, some bullion and whatever else I can think of; like I might toss in some frozen corn and tomatoes this time around, maybe even some noodles. Then thicken it up with some flour and dig in.

Shortly before The Deuce was posted yesterday, I left a comment on the first thread comparing NFL on-the-job fatality rates to other high risk jobs. I didn’t make this comment to diminish the significance of Damar Hamlin’s situation. I continue to pray for him and his family, and hopefully he’ll continue to positively progress in his recovery. Rather, my motivation in digging into this was to simply try to find some perspective regarding “the business side” of the NFL as this situation continues to play out (as it turns out, there are literally dozens of relatively low-paying, higher risk of fatality jobs/careers out there).
I was thinking more about this topic last night and decided to look at another analogy. But instead of comparing jobs, I decided to take a crack at comparing two events: risks of fatality associated with playing in an NFL game versus risks of fatality for mothers giving birth.
For the first “event”, I used data since the NFL merger in 1970, considering the number of teams and games played during the course of the regular season. To keep things simple, I didn’t include preseason or postseason games. That said, the broader you expand the “denominator” in this equation (i.e. over more time, including more games, etc) the lower the risk estimate becomes. So, if anything, this makes my approach more conservative.
In 1970, there were 26 NFL teams and it was a 14-game regular season. I accounted for new franchises joining the league and the expansion of regular season games. I also adjusted for the strike-shortened 1982 and 1987 regular seasons.
Based on this, from 1970 – 2022 (after the upcoming final weekend) there were over 24,500 NFL games played. During a game, there are 22 players on the field for each play which means during that same period, there were more than 540,800 total “player-games” played.
In 1971, Chuck Hughes became the first and, to date, only NFL player to die while playing during an NFL game, and hopefully this continues to be the case. Statistically, this means that since the NFL merger, the risk of fatality for a player in an NFL game is about 0.2 fatalities per 100,000 “player-games” played or, more conservatively, 4.1 fatalities per 100,000 games played.
This compares to 20 fatalities per 100,000 live births based on data provided by the CDC regarding maternal mortality rates in the U.S. for the period of 2018 – 2020.
As I said in my comment yesterday and reiterated above, I’m not trying to diminish the significance of or be disrespectful to Damar Hamlin’s situation.
I’m frustrated because the national narrative lacks perspective and, in general, we’ve lost the ability to have reasoned, respectful discussions, especially on “tough topics”. Everything seems to get pushed to an extreme to one-side or the other, when the reality is, there’s a lot of middle ground that’s getting overlooked.
In this case, not only is the risk of fatality playing the NFL well below many other (lower-paying) jobs, it’s significantly lower than other “normal everyday events”, like child birth.
So, unless we’re ready to cancel moar babies, we should be able to consider/discuss the resumption of NFL games without a large percentage of the population losing their minds.
BTW…in the greater scheme of life, I realize comparing procreation to an entertainment product is ridiculous. This analogy is simply trying to “frame” risks, not compare the importance of one thing to the other.

They had a doc on NFL radio when I was going home yesterday and he said Damar is unlikely to have any damage to his heart if the episode is what has been most widely speculated. The main concern is brain damage, but hopefully with the quick response and this news, if he wants to I think there is a decent chance he plays again.

A good friend of mine is a cop now, pretty high up in the food chain. He and I were shitfaced one night back in high school, raced a train with my Ford Pinto (I don’t recommend using a Ford Pinto for this), hit the tracks at about 40 or 50 mph, train was only about 15 feet away when we hit. Caught some major fucking air, car landed & shit flew all over. Couldn’t believe the fucker kept running. We laughed our asses off. Tom looks over “fuck Bradley, we almost died”, then we just kept laughing.

It’s Robert Duvall’s birthday today, too. One of my favorite actors, and one of the few in Hollywood that I respect.
He lives back in Virginia and is good friends with one of my guides parents. They have known him for years and didn’t know what he did for a living. Finally they asked him last year and he said he worked in the motion picture industry. They asked if he had ever been in anything they might have heard of, lol. Not a clue.

Hell yeah. Might be something I do once they shit-can us here at work & I have a few weeks without much responsibility.
So, had a bit of a scare a couple months ago. Not sure what happened, but had an episode one night during a snowball fight with my son. They checked me out & all looked okay, so not sure what happened. They did a stress test on my heart & had me wear a monitor. Those both went very well, with the exception of something that is likely nothing, but could be something. So, tomorrow I go in and they’re doing a heart catheterization (where they go through an artery & into the heart to do things) to make sure all is well. More precautionary than anything, since I want to start training for some races this summer, and want to make sure it won’t kill me.
Anyway, I won’t be around tomorrow since I’ll be in the damn hospital getting this shit done.

They aren’t sure. Just got short of breath, my chest kinda got tight, breathing was all jacked up. Had to take me to the ER (wife’s idea, not mine, but she was scared so I went so that she’d stop nagging). EKG was fine. I’ve never had a panic attack or any such thing in my life, so I doubt it was that.
Who knows, I’m probably dying.
Still scary. A coworker likely has to have a similar or the same surgery. He is about 40. He was just standing in line a store and passed out. They think his heart stopped and then luckily started again. At least that’s the story I heard.
Oh wow. We were out having a snowball fight, & I just kept getting tired. Eventually sat down on the snow hill & couldn’t find the energy to move. FINALLY was able to shuffle to the house after about 10 minutes. Really weird, especially for someone like me who has a ton of energy normally.

I have had a brain tumor and exploding appendix and another time came close to drowning. I beat the odds every time. Now I might have prostate cancer, brother died from it a year ago.
It keeps things in perspective. We don’t have a lot of time here so do what you want to do. Experience the things you have always wanted to when you can, don’t put them off.

Well the ol saying is at 50, 50% of men have prostate cancer. At 60, 60%, 70, 70% etc. It can be extremely slow growing or some rare forms are quite fast. Not a big deal which is why I get it checked every six months. If it’s there and it’s very questionable it is, it is in it’s very, very early stages. That’s why it’s important to get tested.
Hope you don’t got the cancer.

you know i had something different happen to me a few months back, i could feel my heart missing a beat every once in a while.
i think my mind played tricks on me and i got a little panic’d.
so i went in and got all checked out and everything was really good, nothing wrong with my heart, no blockage of any sort etc….and the doctor was like, if you put 100 guys in a room for 24 hours, everyone one of them would have extra or missed heart beats, not everyone feels them, and he said that i was probably just feeling them for some reason or another…

Yeah, they found a few of those arrythmeas or whatever they’re called on the heart rate monitor. Had to wear that for 2 weeks. Worst part is taking off the monitor when you have as much chest hair as I have.
Should have cleaned that hair up before hand.

I’m honestly not sure. I’ll find out when I get there. For our daughter, I know they put her under, but they had to go through her femoral artery (the one in your thigh). I think they’ll go through my radial artery, so not sure if they have to put me under. I’m guessing they will, but I’m not sure. I most likely get to go home after the procedure. Hopefully I’m feeling good so I can go ice fishing. Might as well take advantage of the day off of work, you know?
Maybe the cold air and quick exertion caught your body a little off guard. Might be a little blockage issue hence the cath which makes sense. Your wife was right. Listen to her.
We’ll find out tomorrow, hopefully it’s nothing. It was way below zero, but I’m out in that shit daily, but you never know.

GF, have you looked at creating a Page instead of a Group on BookFace for Skoloholics? I think you will get more traffic to it and hopefully more traffic here. BookFace will push suggested pages to people that say they are a Vikings fan or interact with Vikings and football Pages, but not with Groups. I think it will also allow posts to show as from Skoloholics on BookFace instead of from Brad to the Group. I was looking at it some the other night and I think if you are an Admin for the page you can create a post and then you have an option to choose who to post it as. I can try and create it if you don’t have the time or just don’t want to do it and then just move admin privileges to you.
I’m all for it. How do you do it?
Go to Pages (on the left hand side if you’re on a computer) and there should be a create new page button. I created a test page just to try it out the other night, that I forgot about. Once you create the Page, if you go to the Page, there is an option to “Switch to Page to start managing it.” This should make it come up on more profiles and suggestions and it will look like the NFL page, etc.
It looks like you can quickly switch back and forth between the Page and your personal profile in the top right as well.
Oh okay. I’ll give it a shot. I wonder if that’s similar to the one we set up for our business? I didn’t do much of that, my wife did, I may have to have her set this up.
It will be the same I think. It was pretty straight forward on my test page. I didn’t add much info (website, address, hours, etc.). With a page, I think you will be able to add a Facebook link to the Skoloholics website as well which I believe will help with Google search thingies.

Yeah so am I here in NC. We’ve had unseasonably cold stretches, below 15 degrees for 8-10 days straight, has only happened a couple times, back in the mid 80’s and then in 1883. So yeah winter thus far has sucked but the one good thing about living in NC spring comes quickly and it warms up late Jan early Feb and before you know it it’s 70+ everyday. Getting up in to the mid 60’s today and sunny so that’s nice.
