I put up a new thread for today’s games, this one is a bit full.
Headed to Ybor City for lunch at the Columbia restaurant. About 45 minutes away, but this is a very special place. Established in 1905 when Ybor was a cigar making town founded by Cuban immigrants, it still stands in its original location and pretty much serves its original Cuban menu. The food is great and the service is too!

I’m working on a plumbing issue. I hate plumbing, but I know enough to be dangerous. I have water pressure everywhere in the house, with the exception of the hot water in my laundry room. Washing machine and the utility sink have low hot water pressure.

Yep, that’s what has me confused. This plumbing hasn’t been touched in 8 years. This “clog” just came out of nowhere yesterday. Very strange. I may have to call a plumber, because I’m baffled.

So Trevor Lawrence had a pretty good season, regardless of yesterday’s results. I wish we had been able to hire Doug Pederson. He would have gotten much more out of the offense year one. Not sure if Mike Caldwell would have done better on defense than Donatell, but couldn’t have done worse.
As to Lawrence, we’ll see if he ever lives up to the GOAT label Five has applied to him.
Ole Trevor grew on me this year. I was not a big fan of fives poster boy but I think the young man is a quality person and teammate and I’m rooting for him from here on out.
Pederson was the guy I wanted the minute zim was fired, the Vikings didn’t even bother interviewing him.

People who say we need a “franchise” QB are really foolish. KOC’s offense is immensely complex with the QB responsible to make number of changes at the line almost every play, and having to read not only the defense, but the receivers too. The mental part of KOC’s offense is exceptionally challenging, and this year the QB had to stand in there and take massive hits waiting for the receivers to come open. No rookie was gonna be remotely successful in that offense. It’s a scheme where the QB has to be on point every single play, and disciplined. Not something a guy right out of college is going to fit into. Rookies run around and try to make plays with their legs because they don’t know what they’re doing. Then they get injured (like Lamar Jackson) and you have to hope your back-up QB is good enough.

We moved up to the D.C. area from here in 2011. Every single winter my wife would say “Tell me again why we moved up here from Florida? So you could work for the SECDEF?”
Yeah…that band right above the Mason Dixon line from Tenn-KY- Wva-Vir / DC is the absolute dreariest in the winter. Cloudy, cold and rainy a lot. Just where the cold fronts from the north and warm air from the south meet. Seems it’s pushed down in to the Carolinas this year which it typically doesnt do but can and has.
We lived in the Orlando area from 05-10 and didnt really like the Fla vibe. Weather was warm but we like a little bit of the seasons with fall and spring so hence NC.
I have a lot of friends who like the seasons too. I’m like “you can have it”. Love the warm weather and golf all year round. Love the beaches and hanging out in a very relaxed environment too. Just fits me as I approach my golden years.
Absolutely we’ve trended toward that same desire for less cold weather and more comfortable climates as we’ve aged.
I think NC gives us the mix we like, spring / fall seasons which we absolutely love, short winters early springs with the flowers and new green growth a renewal of a new year.
I wish I could convince my wife to move south, I’d love to get back down there again. I’ll keep working on her. I’d keep our place up here for the summertime, and for hunting & fishing.
You should go to Seattle in the winter if you want to see dreary. That’s a depressing fucking place in the winter. Beautiful in the summer, though. LIved out there almost 3 years.

Had a great birthday yesterday. Played a very difficult course with water in play on 17 holes. Didn’t rinse a single ball. Shot 89 and won $17 playing bingo, bango, bongo. Got home around 6 p.m. and went to dinner with the wife. We had a great time and the she had a few too many. Had to help her to the car. Grin. Got many well wishes from friends all over the world. It’s great to be 68!

Glad you had a good day! Shot 11 strokes better than me yesterday but it was 32 here warmed up to 40 with cold dense air and the ball traveling at least two clubs shorter than in warmer weather.
You’ll laugh at this Lifer. My one and only birdie came after I hit a really good tee shot on a dog leg right hole with water on both sides of the fairway and several bunkers. Hit an absolute beauty of a fade off the tee and ended up on the right side of the fairway. I was about a 160 yards out and hit a hybrid that looked like an overhand lob shot in tennis. It ran for miles though and ended up 8 feet from the hole, straight up the fall line. Made a good solid putt and drilled it. We laughed about that hole the rest of the round and over drinks in the clubhouse afterwards. Total luck.
Hey with golf we give ourselves 100% of the blame with the poor shots we should give ourselves the same with the good ones. You hit a great drive which put you in a great position that even with a not so perfect second shot you were in a good enough position from the drive to have it end up in a great position, and you still had to make the putt. I call that good play in all aspects.
Laughing… you’re right. I hit 2 out of 3 shots very well. I did hit a flag stick on a 165 yard par 3, but it ended up off the green about a foot from the water. Made bogey with a missed 5 footer for par, so it all evens out.

What course did you play?
Place called Waterlefe in Bradenton FL. Not an exceptionally long course from the whites, but tons of trouble. U.S. Open qualifying course, so you know it’s tough.
I’m not familiar with that course. South of Tampa
Parents lived in Spring Hill for about 10 years, north of Tampa.
I’m in Trinity near Tarpon Springs and New Port Richey living on a course called Fox Hollow. 5th hole is right behind my house. My pool looks over the lake that guards the 5th green. Awesome to drink my coffee in the morning and watch the golfers dunk their shots into the lake. I am looking for property to buy to build the retirement house on, but Spring Hill is just a little too far from MacDill AFB where I work out of.
My Dad went to MacDill for some of his medical.
Yeah, MacDill is a great base. Beautiful and big. Great commissary and BX complex and views of the Bay.

QB is and has been the least of this teams worries the past 5 years. Oline has sucked every one of those five years, we’ve had a decent dline one year of the 5 and they were average. Corners have sucked all 5 years. We’ve had a good QB and skill positions and that’s been about it.
Take a look at the QB’s left competing in the playoffs.
Young and mobile. Kirk is on the wrong side of the trend.
Just admit it.
Sadly, we appear headed to another 2-3 years of slightly better than average.
For sure he’s entering the last contract of his time in the NFL no one is disputing that but he is very mobile and a top 10 maybe top 5 passer in this league. He’s not the next piece to be removed to make us better that’s just not out there. Sure we can go younger by drafting a replacement but I’ll bet all the money I’ve got no way they’ll out perform Cousins currently. I would not be opposed to either a draft and develop guy to have during cousins extension deal or trade a 5th for Lance to the Niners. Otherwise….keep Mullins and mover forward with chains.

If you’re meaning to be developed under cousins then yeah that would be exciting to have a replacement being groomed. Cousins is going to get extended. KOC is not going to risk his tenure on a unknown component in 2024. Just not going to happen.

the D need a youth infusion like offense has had for the last 5 years. We just need to have them contribute positively rather than negative.
I mean look at our options currently…we have no draft capital with 4 picks, a defense that is absolutely the worst in the league and that is 100% true, over the cap by 20 million now.
We have 0 options on trading up to get a QB or even picking one in the first two days of the draft if at all.

Yup, need to draft pieces on the defense, also hope Cine and Booth can contribute meaningfully after rough rookie years. Gonna need a center, there’s no way we’re paying Bradbury $11 million a year or whatever nonsense they’re projecting.
The part that’s hard with “draft and develop” is you’re eating up those vital years of a low hit. 1 is fine… but if Kirk signs for another 3 that hurts.
id be interested to see what “type” of qb KO is after.
On the contrary hitting the lottery with a draft and play QB good enough to make the rest of the roster you built out with the saving is about a 25% likelihood if that. Too risky. If you have 3 years to groom a prospect then yeah you’ll know what you got waiting in the wings probably. I’d rather have a proven QB than a loaded roster with a bust losing games at QB.
Bottomline here is we have two choices…
Extend Cousins and try and fix the defense with the remaining scraps of pennies we have.Purge all the big salaries of aging vets now, let Cousins walk in 24 and spend 24-26 rebuilding the lines, defense and hopefully get lucky developing a QB. Remember we’ve been through decades looking for a decent QB through the draft and had to go retread FA on a one year deal. No guarantees.
Or… the third option. They have a lot of room to make cap space without extending Kirk. OL was better this year than years past but solidifying the C position is crucial to the entire offense. It would be a walk off grand slam if they could nail that pick this year.
I believe the defense they want is FAST! Not stout but fast and pops you in the mouth. The inability to sack the QB or cover WRs will crush any team just like it did the Viking this year.
Shedding those guys… AT, Cook, Kendricks, Hicks, Smith… is job 1. Eat the cap this year and move forward. Two all pro T on offense.. all Pro WR and TE… we need some sort of competence on the other side of the ball… they just don’t have it.
They’ll try to fix the defense this year through FA by extending Kirk and having 30 mill to go shopping in FA and as you pointed out getting rid of all our vets.
You are assuming Kirk accepts a team friendly extension.
I say no extension, then tag him with the non exclusive tag for about $35 million in 2024. If Kirk finds a better offer, let him go and take two first rounders.
I doubt any team gives up two first rounders for an aging and average QB.
He would accept it and I never said “team friendly” what it would be is a year 1 low cap hit via signing bonus and guaranteed money being pushed out.
The ceiling has been reached with Cousins.

I don’t think so at all. I didn’t like KOC’s scheme or play calling this year. He was a rookie and it showed. Cousins production should be much better next year as he’ll finally get a second go round in an offense with the same coordinator. KOC hopefully learned some lessons and will be better next year as well. Cousins is capable of 5K yards and 40 TD’s or more. I’m hoping that KOC will change the offense sufficiently to enable that.
You put a lot of blame on KOC’s play calling and yes it was far from perfect but also understand he had to get Kirk to break a lot of bad habits like giving up on plays and checking down fearing making a mistake. Hence why Cousins ints were up but I think to your point it will be much better in 23 now that they’ve got a year under their belt together which should make both much more comfortable.
Cousins “bad habits” of ensuring he didn’t turn the ball over was one reason his teams were in contention to win games. Ball security is job 1 for the QB, and Cousins was called a “turnover machine” in his early years with the Redskins because in the few games he played in he threw a lot of interceptions. Thus he learned early that throwing the ball into bad places wasn’t going to make things better for his team. Cousins was told to make throws that went against his grain this year, but I wouldn’t call protecting the ball a bad habit. He has more interceptions and fewer TD’s this year than normal. Throwing the ball into bad places doesn’t help your team in my opinion. Protecting the ball is a “good habit” in my humble opinion.
For sure it’s a fine line of being aggressive and being safe but still making enough plays to win games. Cousins does a great job of that. People watch Mahomes and immediately get critical of Kirk like…”why can’t we get a qb like that” lol…so dumb…they think generational qb’s or the next great running qb who is actually decent grow on trees.
I think KOC an Kirk will find a nice balance in 23 and the ints will come down. Many of those were off WR’s hands an intercepted but some were ugly bad throws where you can tell Kirk and the WR were not on the same page.
Year two in an offensive scheme “usually” results in a big jump in productivity. Cousins has never had a year two in a system except for 2016 when he threw for almost 5K yards with Sean McVay. We all certainly hope that happens with Cousins and KOC next year.

Take a look at the teams left competing in the playoff’s. Four of them (Eagles, Niners, Bills, and Cowboys) were at the top of the league running the ball. Five of them have top defenses. Teams compete for championships. Yes a talented QB is a key ingredient to a teams success, but it’s not the sole factor in the equation by a long shot. Cousins does more than his fair share for the Vikings. Top nine in the league in passing stats every single year and this year top five. You aren’t going to “get better” with a different QB, and very likely you get worse.
As I said below yesterday morning….we’re going to realize just how horrible the Vikings defense is and was. 38-7….you can’t make it up.

Was 33 degrees when we tee’d off this morning at 8:30, no wind. Shot a 50 on the front, 50 on the back. Only one triple all day, bunch of doubles and bogeys and not one single par or birdie. Had a bunch of edge burner par putts missed. Not bad for the conditions and not playing in over a month. Still not happy with the score.
