Most of you didn’t work, and therefore, didn’t tune in yesterday, so we can briefly revisit the game one more time. I’ll just re-post what I said yesterday, since my opinion hasn’t changed since then.
Another great win on Saturday brought the Vikings to 12-3 on this 2022-23 NFL season, and they’re sitting firmly as the #2 seed in the NFC playoff race, a game ahead of the 49ers with two games remaining. We expected a close game, and the Vikings didn’t disappoint. The Vikings kept it close, had a chance to put it away late, and allowed the Giants to tie it just before the clock ran out. However, they left too much time on the clock for Kirk Cousins, and he led the Vikings down the field into range for a LONG Greg Joseph field goal attempt. As we all expected, Joseph nailed the 61-yarder to win the game. Wow, what a finish, and what a great early Christmas present for Vikings fans.
The Vikings will travel to Green Bay on Sunday where they will try to knock the Packers out of the playoff hunt (please do this so that the talking heads have to shut up about the Packers being in it), then they finish the season in Chicago when they take on the Bears to end the regular season.

The dead money is what they have already been paid in bonus so the only way to not have dead money is to let them play out the whole contract. If they aren’t cut or traded there is no dead money.

They could restructure and lengthen the contract, but signing bonuses have been paid so eventually you have to take the cap hit. To explain simply a 5 year contract with a 10 million dollar signing bonus would have 2 mill per year count towards the cap (not counting the rest of the salary). If you cut the player after a year, all remaining signing bonus will count against the cap (so 8 mill after 1 year, 6 after 2). There are things they can do to move that around a little like post June 1 cuts and such but the cap hit has to be taken at some point. The 20 mill cap hit is likely unguaranteed money in the form of a roster bonus or something so that could be avoided with a restructure.
But you can take that dead in that scenario at 2M for each year of the contract term, right? So on thelen they are eating significant ded.
As long as you don’t cut the player. That terminates the contract and all paid money needs to count against the cap. That’s why Mahomes’ contract is team friendly. They structured very little signing bonus into the original. Most of the contract is roster bonuses that get counted the year they are achieved. That gives them the ability to restructure his contract every year and just move some roster bonus to signing bonus when they want to sign a deal with somebody else. That becomes prorated over the remaining term of the contract, but as long as they don’t cut him prior to the end of the contract, the overall paid will end up the same. Restructuring to signing bonus is the “kicking the can”.
Players are happy to get signing bonus because they get the check when they sign the contract. Teams like it because it gives them immediate cap space. The problem is you have to have the cash. The Raiders have historically struggled with that aspect. The remainder of the contract has to be placed into an escrow so that a couple of years into a contract a team can’t be unable to pay a player. That’s why they have struggled to sign big name players in the past. They couldn’t afford it. They had the cap space but not the cash.
Wait, so in that scenario if you cut the player year 1 of a 5 year deal all 8M go ded that year?
Correct. The new trick is to add “void years” ie Brady to stretch the hit out. They basically write a 3 year deal but add 2 void years so the prorated signing bonus is a smaller hit each year, until the player is gone anyway and then it is time to pay the piper.
You can also add guaranteed base salary to have a certain amount hit when you want it to (of which the guarantee can be activated when you want/agree to). So Mahomes for example has a guaranteed salary that increases over the life of the contract which they do assuming the salary cap will increase. His roster bonus each year is like 20 mil to 40 mil so they have a ton of cap space with the stroke of a pen if they want it. Just take 40 mil of roster bonus, make it signing bonus over 5 years and you just created over 30 mil in cap space. You are reducing your cap space in subsequent years and increases the potential dead hit, but dead hit only matters if you get rid of a player.
I hate void years. If I were GM, I’d avoid that at all costs. When you inherit someone else’s screw up contracts, it’s a necessary evil at times.

I like taking my wife. She’s not a big golfer so the simulator is a lot easier. It depends on the system they have as far as accuracy of them. The ones here are pretty good and the additional benefits include less walking, food on demand, no dealing with the weather, beer on demand, getting out of the house and doing something.
Not a fan of virtual golf.
I’ve done Top Golf as well. It’s okay for half an hour. After that, it sucks.
If you don’t golf, you might like all that virtual stuff.
