It sure was a relaxing day of NFL football yesterday. It’s kinda’ fun to watch when you can be detached, and don’t really care who wins the games. There were a couple games that affected playoff position, and of course, games that affected our fantasy football teams, which is FAR less nerve-wracking than watching our favorite team.
Speaking of favorite teams, I’m glad mine isn’t the Broncos. Yikes. It isn’t good when you have defensive players getting into the face of your franchise QB. A QB for whom you just traded two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and a fourth-round pick, then signed to a massive five-year extension worth $242 million with $161 million guaranteed. Also a QB who currently can’t find his ass with both hands. It also isn’t good when your “offensive genius” newfangled head coach can’t put an offense together. Is it the QB? Is it the coach? I don’t know, but I’m glad it isn’t our problem.

Odell Beckham Jr. was removed by police from a flight in MIami, from CBS Sports. I don’t think this is as big of deal as some are making it, but it’s not a good look at a time when a player is seeking a team to sign with. It sounds like he was asleep prior to the flight, and when they tried to wake him to get him to put his seat belt on (I still don’t understand the logic of a seat belt. If the plane goes down, you’re toast), and he was unresponsive. Not sure, maybe one too many gummies or something.

Theoretically though, if you won the SB you could still land #1 pick
I think the issue is, and maybe im wrong but the NFL is the only league or, it at least SEEMS to be the only pro league where first round picks are drafted and can IMMEDIATLY change a team and affect the league. Rarely does that happen in the NBA, and literally never in the MLB with the minor league system. A stacked SB roster with cap space getting the first round pick would get ugly in a hurry.
Well, a SB team isn’t going to be eligible for a top 5/10 team lottery.
And 1 superstar makes a much bigger difference in the NBA.
I think if the NFL can make more money… they’re going to find a way.

I like them both and consider them long term internet buddies. I understand where they’re coming from. After being let down for decades, they don’t want to get their hopes up until the Vikings demonstrate they won’t disappoint again in the playoffs. They also raise legitimate concerns about the defense, and especially the secondary.
I do understand that constant “we stink” posts after every positive post gets old. It seemed to me lately that had significantly improved, but when the other side baits them right off the bat calling them idiots, “you suck” and the like, are they not allowed to respond?
I am against banning other than for obvious stuff such as spam, death threats, and porn.

Not that my opinion matters much but I think you and Kathy (both of whom I respect) are missing the point. Brad and others (Mick, Skolly, et al) spend a lot of time and money (I’m assuming) cultivating a community but also a business model.
Personally, I have no issue with that dual objective. I know Brad better than many of the others involved in building this site but the bottom line is, he’s a good guy (I’m assuming you both agree) and i believe it would be selfish of me to expect him and others to create this platform as a charity.
That said, unless you’re someone who has the past DN experience before things got so out of whack with five, and later Kodiak (I don’t remember him from the earlier days), this wouldn’t be a “welcoming community” for someone interested in a Vikings-centric blog.
I think anyone who took an honest step back and put themselves in a potential new posters shoes would have to agree.
And therein lies the rub. Five and Kodiak have consistently demonstrated a lack of ability to “self-moderate”. Sure, there are some (misguided, IMO) old timers that will side with them under the guise of “free speech”, “they’re my buddies” or “they don’t bother me”.
But, IMO, those opinions are completely disrespectful to the time, effort and expense of those who built this house in the first place. Short term, there may be some losses but long term; the best “business decision” is for trolls to go away or adjust (i.e. this is a five/Kodiak choice, IMO, not a mod enforcement issue).
BTW…I have no incentive in putting this out there other than right is right, according to me. And I’ll probably be marginalized by the “clique” because of it.

From a profitability perspective, what “sells” is a half glass full perspective on the content regarding the team, as hope sells and doom doesn’t, as well as a comment section that promotes discussion. Pervasive negative And derisive comments kill discussion and turn people off.
It’s not just them “being let down for decades” to accept where they’re coming from Kathy. They bully and attack with their BS negative narratives and try to make people feel dumb for supporting the team and the do it over and over and over even when something very positive happens Kodiak has to twist it in to a negative to try and get a reaction.
I don’t miss their BS one bit. I was about the only one who would fight them on it consistently and they always turned it personal which I would respond in kind. Just not enjoyable for anyone and if you’ve noticed I don’t do that with anyone else.

Don’t get me wrong, because I like having them around, but just because they were baited a few times does not excuse the other 1000 times they have said the same negative stuff. Usually I’m ok with what they say, but 5 pushed all my buttons on Thursday night. I realize that there are issues with this team, but banging the drum hard in the first 15 minutes after a victory gets old especially when a bunch of us want to come on the site and revel in a victory. Why did folks leave the DN? Many of us came here because we didn’t like the heavy handed moderation on other sites. You’ve made it clear you don’t care what I think, though, so I will shut my mouth.
Everyone should have an opinion, but trolling can’t be allowed or the site will dwindle and die. The assertion that we won’t allow other opinions is absurd. Hell, I offered five the opportunity to be an author and post his own piece, but he didn’t take the offer. I think we need more opinions, not fewer, because a healthy debate is how we grow and learn. The problem comes with every thread on every post being polluted with “we suck” and “booger eating homers”, etc.
The name calling and such toward them isn’t right, but after 8 years of doing this shit over and over again, some folks have grown weary of it.
I have no desire to ban anyone, never have. I’ve warned, asked politely, and basically begged both of them to just tone down the constant trolling and harassment, but it fell on deaf ears. When they refuse to attempt to change, I don’t know what other choice a person has at some point.
I think of a new fan coming to this site. Let’s say it’s a female. They open the thread and see things like “all women are whores” and “the country fell off a cliff with the 19th amendment”. I wouldn’t expect that person to come back.
Just because freedom allows someone to say something doesn’t mean they should. We, as friends, should call each other out when one of us gets out of line. That’s how a community stays friendly and thriving. Some things should not be allowed. The proper way to address it is in private with the person who is out of line. That is exactly what I did. It was those two who decided to post it on here and make it public. As far as I’m concerned, it should have remained a private conversation between myself and those two.
As I’ve said, I have no issue with either five or kodiak. I consider both to be friends. If one of my friends here in Bismarck was talking to other friends the way those two talk to people on here, I’d pull them aside and politely ask them to tone it down, too.

I agree that as adults we should be able to tell each other when someone is out of line, which I have done on occasion and always got a positive result. I really did think they made an effort and did much better on the constant “we stink” types of comments.
I didn’t like some of the things Kodiak said about women, but understood what he’d been through with his crazy ex and just overlooked it, but I’m not very thin skinned. Maybe it was my fault for not raising that issue with him. I think he would have responded positively.
Kodiak’s “crazy ex wife” is according to him. Several years ago I sort of bought into that “schtick” of his but after observing his behavior and alleged claims of kid(s) in the Ivy League, I’m assuming his wife deserves a ton of credit for both genes and nurturing. It certainly doesn’t come from him.

I enjoyed watching college football this weekend. The Gophers beat the Badgers for the second year in a row, which hadn’t happened in like 30 years. Gophers might have a decent QB in the freshman greek kid.

I read a lot. Mostly fiction but every once in awhile I’ll explore an off the wall topic just to stretch my brain. I recently read 3 different books by previously high-ranking, ex-Scientologists, including Leah Remini’s (wife on King of Queens) expose.
Admittedly, I don’t know much about the “religion” but the sheer volume of ex-practitioner stories and the consistency of their experiences during their time in “the church” is pretty damning. Not to mention that Tom Cruise’s celebrity has essentially led him to become the 2nd most powerful person in their organization, after the current COB (“Chairman of the Board”), David Miscavage who took over after L. Ron Hubbard’s death. Miscavage is a complete lunatic.

As someone firmly in the “Let the kids celebrate and have fun” camp – this shit is getting a little out of hand. Everyone’s gotta get on the field and celebrate every takeaway for 5 minutes, and half the time you see guys get 7 yards on 3rd and 10 and celebrate like they got a first down. Izaac Pacheco was celebrating literally every carry like he’d won the Owl, just crazy.

Migration from crappy, but free, Outlook plugins to Office 365 is going about as smoothly as you’d expect. Many people in the office are either locked out of their email completely or forced to use the web browser version to read emails.
Looking like another slow day, with ~50% of the manufacturing staff out of the office. Totally OK by me.

What’s really overrated is whoever programmed stop lights to not change for 30 seconds while there’s absolutely no cross-traffic until the next set of cars are coming through and then it finally changes. I swear traffic light changes are just random half the time, no programming at all.
I think its legal to run a red light if its been like over a couple minutes and there is no traffic, not completely sure though. This has happens to me regularly by my house where the stupid sensor or whatever doesn’t trigger and I’ve sat for as many as 5 minutes with no other cars entering the intersection before eventually just going through.
I do. When there is nobody within miles, I consider it to be allowable. Cop didn’t see it, I didn’t do it.

I have done this once or twice getting off of highway 252 at my old place. I swear I sat there for 10 minutes one time and after that either did not go that way or just said fuck it if there were no cars.
And now that I think about it, what pisses me off the most about traffic lights is when there are 5 lights & a sign for ‘if yellow flashing you must yield’ and yet it isn’t programmed to ever use the yellow flashing light! Motherfucker, give me the option to turn if literally no one else is around.

I’ve noticed that when driving in or around Minneapolis, you spend at least 70% of your time either sitting at a red light, or sitting still in traffic for no reason. There’s a wreck in the eastbound lane, traffic in the westbound lane will stop because dilfer dumb butt decides he needs to lock up his brakes so he can see the accident on the other side. Maddening. If I lived there, I’d install twin .50 cal fully automatic cannons on the front of my pickup.
Or one of those massive jet engine burner things that trains use to melt the snow off the tracks. Would be awesome to just disintegrate other vehicles whose occupants don’t know how to drive.

What I liked about driving truck, you had a CB where you could communicate with other drivers. Too bad the cars didn’t have them, they were usually the ones I wanted to speak with. Nowadays, the truck drivers are the worst drivers.

yeah I totally believe manufacturing is overrated and was not kidding.
Also, there is 100% programming on 99% of traffic lights, what’s needed at all imo is loop detection so the program can detect when vehicle is queuing, also there is better tech available to detect stacking lengths and adjust timing based on congestion.
I told my people to make sure whichever light you are at IS random though because I want to inconvenience you for ~30 seconds every chance I can.

I swear the programming looks for cars queuing, waits until cross traffic is actually coming and then changes – making the most people wait the longest time possible.
I get why you might not want fast changes during heavier traffic, but man it really seems like when traffic is low the lights should just immediately change unless there cars either about to cross or coming from the light immediately prior (which you should be able to sense with the queue detectors there?)
That’s the worst. You could be on a side street to a major road at midnight with not a headlight in sight and the fucking light stays red.

I poured my own beer at a brewery during the Ghana/Portugal World Cup game, ate way too much food and fell asleep during the Cowboys/Giants game and missed the first half of the Vikings game. Brewed a beer over the weekend, pitched the yeast a bit too hot and praying it works, then sliced my finger on a hose clamp while cleaning up. All in all, pretty good weekend – if only it were longer.
I spent most of it watching Disney movies with a sick kid. I also owned 5 again in fantasy football, this time by roughly 100 points.
