There are only a few more days left of this mini-bye week, as the New York Jets will travel to Minneapolis to take on the Vikings this Sunday. It’s a noon kickoff (thank God), and it should be a great game. At this point, the Vikings are 3-point favorites, link courtesy of Yahoo Sports. It would be nice if the Vikings could blow a team out one of these weeks, but I wouldn’t put money on it happening on Sunday, although I do expect the Vikings to cover the spread. Wait for Skodiers to post Skoldiers Spreads for more detailed information on the gambling side of things. Have your heart ready for another exciting game!

So, planning ahead to when they sell our company and shitcan everyone. I think the fam and I (after school is out) are going to go on a cross country trip in the vehicle, mainly because I loathe flying and the TSA rectal exams.
Thinking of leaving Bismarck, head toward the grand canyon, stop along the way. Rapid City for a day, stay at the water park, then on to Denver for a couple days, most likely. Hit up Estes Park & places like that, also stay at a water park (remember I have a 7 year old). Trying to figure out where to stop after that on our way to the Grand Canyon, then on to Vegas, then Phoenix.
Not sure which way to head after Phoenix. Sure is fun to plan this stuff, though. Hopefully I have a fat severance check to enjoy for a few weeks of relaxation and fun.
Here’s something I want to figure out how to do with my dad.

Check out Leadville – up in the mountains, cool place. Wife and I got a badass AirBnB there a few years ago. White knuckle driving in the mountains for first timers but the scenery was stunning. The offspring will love it. Also a place where Doc Holliday stood trial for shooting a man over a $5 debt.
Oh wow, sounds great! Mountains don’t scare me, I’ve driven 18 wheeler up & down the mountains in the Rockies & the Appalachians. Not much bothers me on the road, with the exception of other drivers.
My wife and I were in Leadville once. Some crazy guy was wandering down the middle of the street talking to himself. (No it wasn’t me).
I used to have relatives in Leadville, they worked in the mines. The altitude sickness is a real thing (2 miles high), but had a lot of fun there. My cousins introduced me to video arcades and Monty Python, so it’s been a few years.
These are the people that supposedly bought the Outlaws training building in Billings if you spend some time around Denver it looks like a sweet place:

If you click on the picture it will bring up their website. There’s some sort of Kart Track, a trampoline park and a massive indoor playground.
There’s also a “Ninja Warrior” gym near Denver called the Warrior Challenge Arena. I was planning on going there for the bachelor party I was planning, but ended up not going to CO because plane tickets were like $600 round trip.

I recall at the DN that there were some commenters who only showed up when there was some controversy that they could jump into. Guys like Jorge, never had anything to say unless there was some kind of controversy, then they would come in full tilt & try to gaslight everyone. Then you had BAP, who tended to be a dick in any situation.
I think the worst guy I remember was Caribbean something. I always got along well with everybody else, even if we didn’t agree. Maybe that was because of the whole politics rule but most everybody seemed like at least alright people.

I never had an issue with Purple Caribbean, but it seemed most everyone else did. Same with BAP, he never messed with me. BAP had some weird thing with fil, of all people, used to troll every comment of his. Guy was a loon.
Phil would try and response in a rational way to him. Wrong approach to a troll.
Either ignore them or hit them. Don’t try and defend anything. Its what they want. You defend and they just make your argument into some absurd strawman, and attack that.
If 5 ever comes back watch his comments. He loves a good strawman attack.
Free advice for all: Don’t defend how he twists your take. Just attack his points. Which is usually pretty easy since he usually takes some extreme position.

OK, I hadn’t heard about this litter box crap until a couple of weeks ago when my Grandma died. I still can’t believe that’s really a thing. That is just absolutely insane. How many schools are doing this in MN? I was told Becker and maybe Princeton but it has to be more than those two. If they’re doing it some schools in the cities have to be.
It’s not a thing, which is why that campaign sucked and didn’t work.
A friend of mine works in a middle school in Elk River and said some of the new schoolboard members’ first order was to get litter boxes out of schools. There weren’t any, so at least it was easy to comply.
OK, that makes me feel a little better. I was told it actually existed at least in Becker and I couldn’t believe that was real even in a liberal state like MN.
Yeah, I have never once seen confirmation. My best guess is that some teacher might have had a cat and someone saw a litter box and somehow that rumor spread like wildfire. Even Jensen’s campaign never backed it up.

Some close family friends had a daughter who was about 16 at the time and we were hanging out with their family at their house. She mentions to me that she doesn’t think her dance teacher likes her and, just to be conversational, I ask her if she had a male or female instructor. She says, “He’s a male”. And I say, “Oh cool, what’s his name”? She responds, “Hey Whore (phonetically)”.
So, I say, “His name’s ‘Hey Whore’? Is he Hispanic?” And she says, “Yes.” And I say, are you sure it’s not “Jorge”? And she says, “Yeah…that’s it! I always get it confused”. So I ask, “You’ve been calling him ‘Hey Whore’ all this time”? She nods and I say, “Well that’s probably why he doesn’t like you…’Hey Whore’ means something very different than Jorge and you’ll have to get your parents to explain it to you.”
Her parents were just outside the room standing in the kitchen as this conversation is happening and her dad stumbles into the family room crying laughing. He just looks at his daughter and says, “Sweetheart, I’ll explain later but that’s right…you really need to stop calling him ‘Hey Whore'”.
She was a very sweet kid, but very naïve and they were a very religious family, so she was a bit sheltered too. She had no idea the problem she had created for herself.

Just to stir the pot a little since our regular stirrers aren’t around. I had an e-mail come through from Epoch media that says there is a Canadian study that says smoking marijuana is worse for the lungs then smoking tobacco.
I think that inhaling any kind of smoke into your lungs repetitively is generally going to be bad for a person. It would surprise me if smoking weed was more harmful than cigs, mainly because with cigarettes, you’re smoking much more often. Figure a pack a day smoker is smoking 20 cigs a day, not many are going to smoke 20 joints a day.
Sometimes i google actors from 50’s and 60’s. They died, some smoked 6 packs a day.
My dad smoked 5 packs a day of filterless. That was after WWII, smoked for a long time, quit before I was born, but the damage was done. Died of lung cancer at the age of 60.
My grandpa was a heavy smoker during WW2 as well. He also destroyed 8 Germany airplanes in one day.

I’ve always heard there is more tar build up weight for weight. I think the difference is most people don’t smoke a pack of the devil’s lettuce a day. I mean I smoke typically one small puff at night to get to sleep and then very rarely is it recreational.
I have been falling asleep so much easier since my trip up to Michigan. Been great. Can’t really do it recreationally because it just puts me to sleep.

If it is possible what would people think of a sort of generic/form first post thing. I was just thinking about the first time I posted on the DN. I lurked for a long time and wanted to post, but you can’t really jump in cold and make a smart ass remark to something said by somebody you haven’t actually talked to and making a cold hi guys comment can feel weird. It was kind of the same here to begin with. I wasn’t a big commenter at the DN other than interactions with specific people or on specific topics and didn’t start there until the fracture started so I didn’t really know some of the guys here. I don’t know if any of that makes sense, but just a thought, sort of a hey guys I’m new and here’s a little about me.
We’ve gained more followers and attention per SEO over the past few days since they’re pouting then we did in one month. Good for skoloholics and I don’t lose sleep over them pouting.

On the new people thing, I was just thinking of how it felt to post the first time. It can feel weird to just randomly say, “hey guys, what’s up? I’ve been creeping on your conversations for awhile and figured I’d finally say something.” There may be a better way to approach it but I was just trying to think of an easy way to make it more comfortable to introduce themselves and join the conversation. Everybody here (even the missing ones) are welcoming, at least initially. Yes, some of the conversations get to places maybe they shouldn’t, but overall I think everybody here gets along good with everybody. Some things don’t need to be repeated so much and some conversations get long, but just scroll past it.
I lurked for a while, too. I think I started commenting during the Favre era, although I lurked pre-Favre. Yeah, posting the first time was difficult. I started at Yahoo, then realized that the people there were the worst that our society has to offer. So, I looked around, the DN was at the top of the search, so that’s where I went. The rest, as they say, is history.
2 years later, I was moderating (fell into that one). Crazy how life works.

We’ve been discussing this. I have the devs working on a welcome page, just so folks know where to go. Mick mentioned having a button, a newcomer can click it & it would bring up an introductory page that welcomes them & tells them where to go (go to News & Discussion for a wide open discussion, front porch for discussion without politics etc.).
Nice, I like it. Love what you’ve built so far and happy to see it growing. At the risk of a coworker (or worse my wife) finding this place I’m trying to share all your Facebook posts to get some more people aboard the ship.

Absolutely. More traffic and conversation is good for everybody and if you can monetize this place, all the better, you deserve it for sticking your neck out. I would be pumped to see this be THE Vikings website and know that in my own small way I was a part of it. No matter what though, the community is great and while it will inevitably change some I love what you have built and hope the best. I wish I had more time and could put research and time into writing an article or two myself, I think that would be fun. Just too hard right now with work and kids. Maybe I’ll get bored this winter after a couple of projects are done and come up with a good idea and write a fan post.

I remember one day in middle school I was on the bench while a teammate was at the plate, ended up hitting a hard foul ball and it ended up hitting some little kid in the bleachers and my mom said there was a visible dent. I never saw it, but it has stuck with me. Always have my head on a swivel around baseball.
I’ve been hit enough pitching slow pitch softball and had some close calls. I couldn’t imagine catching a baseball off a 90 mph fastball when you’re leaning forward from the throw. At least in softball I have a chance to prepare and react.
I honestly wish they’d convert to all wooden bats, it’s the smart thing to do. Now they have these crazy triple-wall bats & stuff. Insanity. Just asking for fatalities.
Best softball league experience I ever had was in a wood bat league. Some teams win purely because they spend $600 on a spring-loaded Acme-brand bad.
I believe it, separate the true hitters from the bunch.
Lots of spray hitting, occasionally hitting a triple to the opposite field because that outfielder would cheat in, very rarely did run-rule games happen. Plus the meatheads who buy all the gear and were former ballplayers stay in their A/B leagues.
I love hitting to the opposite field. Especially if you yank a couple in your first at bat or two, then they cheat over thinking you’re a pull hitter, then you drive one down the right field line.
Often times these powerhouse teams would put their weakest fielder in the opposite outfield, usually RF. I hit one way over one guys head one time and he ended up somehow injuring himself while I walked from 2nd to 3rd. Felt a little bad, but not too much.
I played in those upper leagues for one year when I was like 22 or 23. Heard guys yelling at each other on the field, and decided that wasn’t for me, or I would be in an altercation or two. I ain’t gonna listen to that shit. I played rec ball every year after that until I stopped playing 7 or 8 years ago, loved it.
I usually played in the lower leagues because my friends from college didn’t play much baseball until college, and there were always teams from the upper league who would use the lower leagues as “practice”. Ended up blasting a homer way past the fence that game, too. We got run-ruled in like the 4th inning but I had fun!
I never have been hit pitching in slow pitch, but every time I leave one over the outside third of the plate I get right into defensive position. At least if it’s inside they’ll pull it down the line because everyone just swings for the fences.
Yeah, I play lower league so guys aren’t good enough to control where they hit it. If I have a guy trying to pull one and leave it outside, I know it’s coming at my face. I have good reflexes and have caught lots of line drives but also taken them off the knee, wrist, thumb, ribs and sternum. The old reflexes seem to be getting a little slower in the last couple years.
I got hit when I was pitching, but yeah, I ALWAYS pay attention when around baseball. A guy I knew in high school hit a ball one time that killed a kid, he was never the same. I think he’s deep in the belly of addiction to this day.

DogSS of War is my favorite of them, though. You can search for it at Amazon. 10 review so far, not all of them terrible. It was also published in the Czech Republic of all places at one time. I found of some of their reviews and translated them. Pretty funny. I guess the guy that translated the book didn’t know how to render some of the more colorful statements.

Yes, it is a World War II action/horror novel.
DogSS of War was published by a small-press publisher in 2005. They said they’d do it in hardcover and have a certain print-run, etc. Then the publisher started going belly-up and changed everything they told me was going to happen. The book received zero promotion, and the publisher tanked soon after.
The rights reverted back to me, so then I polished it up a bit more and self-published it in 2010 again. Since then, I’ve self-published more books using Amazon’s book publishing. I still submit some to publishers, but it does not matter as much to me anymore to get into traditional publishing.
Mainly, now I just try to get short stories published at various places as a way to promote my longer works. I’d make more working at McDonalds, but a writer is what I wanted to be when I grew up. I sort of did it.

Yep, we go by Candy Cane Lane every year when we’re there. The bar I went to was on the eastern side of Billings, I believe. Like I said, that evening is a bit foggy. I recall some Packer fan coming in after the game & talking shit, we engaged in some friendly banter. Really had a great time, but I don’t recall the name of the place. There was a casino attached, but then again, there’s a casino attached to everything in Billings.

That would be cool. The last time I golfed was probably a decade ago or more. I’m okay at mini-golf, although the windmill tends to get me every time. Kiddo would be all over the trampoline park. I think we’re going to spend one day at the Bighorn Resort as well, swim at the water park, so yeah, we’ll be around town a bit.
I can only spend so much time cooped up in a house before I start going crazy, and that isn’t good for anyone, so my wife is okay with the fact that I’ll be off doing other things during the trip. My son shares my metabolism, so he usually goes with me when I go somewhere.
Right on. Grouse and goose season will still be open. I know a couple of places to go but nothing really good anymore. My kids can’t stand being cooped up for more than about 4 hours so we’re always doing something. There’s always the Chuck of Cheese of course but my kids love the trampoline park. There is a pretty cool simulator golf place on the west end now, that’s why I asked about the golf. I’ve heard the Bighorn resort is cool but I’ve never been there. Mini golf course got turned into a CBD place so that kind of sucks. They supposedly sold the Outlaws training facility to a couple from Denver that owns an indoor park/trampoline park deal so we’ll see what they turn that place into. I’m guessing you have been, but you should definitely get down to Red Lodge if you haven’t yet.

They’ve only got 5.5M available this season, and A-aron’s contract kills them starting next year.
Should be enough to sign him, though. It’ll be prorated, so even if they sign him to a $10 million contract, they’d owe him less than $3 million for the rest of the year. Not saying he’d sign for $10 million/year, but it’s easier to do the math.
Peckers have played 12 games, so have completed 12/17 of their season (70.6%), so they’d only pay ~29.4% of whatever annual contract they’d sign him to.

Guessing this was supposed to be a reply to my post. The image is really dark and seems to have a little extra red in it. The rest of the colors are there but the whole image is dark, kind of like dimming your phone in the sun.

These are the kind of things that contribute to societal collapse. Once we stop crossing the Ts, dotting the Is and wrapping light strings around Christmas trees horizontally, it’s the gateway to letting the Lord Humongouses of the world lose.
Who knows about TVs here? My TV turned dark and red tinted last night and is now almost unseeable. It is probably 10 years old so it has had a good run. Question is, is this likely a terminal issue or something I might be able to fix?

Have you installed updates on your TV? Sometimes you have to run an HDMI from your PC and update the software in your TV. Give that a shot.
Yeah, this thing is too old to need updates. It’s not a smart TV, that’s why I’m rolling the Fire Stick. It’s a flat screen but still like 4 inches thick if that says anything about how old it is.
I have a 12 year old Samsung that isn’t a smart TV, but you still need to apply updates. I have to log on to the Samsung site, find my TV & select the update function, then run a cord (I use HDMI) from my PC to the TV & run the update. I’m guessing Vizio is the same.

We don’t have a cable box or regular channels. I do have Big Buck Hunter but that didn’t want to work (not uncommon, it’s fun to play with the kids but can be testy) and before I trouble shot that it decided to start working again.
Ok, so the issue is something with the circuitry. Either your fire stick is going out and sending bad communication to the TV or the issue is the TV and most likely a circuit board or connection to/from the circuit board issue, could be a ribbon cable from the circuit board malfunction but my guess is its the board itself if indeed the TV is the problem. It is pretty easy to check the connections inside and if needed replace the board if you are so inclined. An LCD TV has a bunch of really skinny fluorescent bulbs that light the screen but what you described is not really a bulb issue.
I used to know a good TV repairman. He was old school analog. Wizard with tubes and stuff. He retired when TV technology shifted. Said repair was mostly about circuit boards now. Dark tinted screen could be panel failure, maybe back light. I wouldn’t think it would be any settings because most folks don’t go in and play with those much.
Such things could maybe be fixed, but the way TV prices have gone down and sizes have gone up, might be a good time to upgrade. For what the repair bill could be, you might be halfway to a better set already.
TVs nowadays have become another throw away item. The cost to repair is more than likely be more than the cost of a new tv.

There is a certain sense of satisfaction that come from fixing something yourself.
I fixed one of our TVs not too long ago, it kept randomly turning off so I opened it up and checked the power supply wiring which was fine, then looked at the circuit board and could see a capacitor was shot. I know you can replace them individually but I am not that skilled so I just found a new circuit board and bought it, super easy.
I’m not that great with a soldering gun, I’d probably screw the pooch if I tried replacing a capacitor.
Same, that story likely ends with many cuss words and some sort of injury for me.
Yeah, if you don’t solder regularly definitely don’t try to solder on a circuit board unless you’re ok with just mangling it.
Last job was in a circuit board manufacturing company, essentially the only people that were even qualified to solder were little Asian women with more hand dexterity than you can imagine.
Haha yeah I imagine he’s not allowed near too many precision manufacturing facilities.
But actually, watching someone hand solder modern through-hole or surface mount components in just a couple of seconds (solder pads are *maybe* 1mm x 2mm area) is pretty impressive to watch.

Thanks. It probably is about time to upgrade but with vehicle repairs looming I really didn’t want to right now. Hopefully it was just the 6 month old Fire Stick but we’ll see. It started in the middle of a show last night and I was too frustrated to deal with it much and just went to bed. Tried rebooting everything last night and again this morning and nothing changed until the third reboot of the Fire Stick.
Hopefully, it is just a software glitch rather than a hardware glitch if rebooting solved the issue for now.

I have a Phillips LCD TV that I bought in 2005 that runs like the day I bought it. Also have a big Vizio that I bought like 3 years ago that doesn’t always function properly, I have to update it and sometimes unplug it to get it to come on, its low grade dog food but it was like $200 on black Friday for a 55″.

New furnaces can be great. I got a new one like seven years ago. Went from fuel oil to natural gas. That, in conjunction with new windows, and my heating bill is now nothing compared to what it once once. I could crank it to 75 if I wanted.
I spent four winters (obviously not married then) with the thermostat at 50 degrees in the winter to cut costs when margins were tighter for me. You get to the point where sometimes you turn it up to 55 to take the edge off, and you are like…ah, balmy!

Our furnace is about 30 years old, so I’m figuring our day is coming fast when we will need to get a new one. If you don’t mind, what $ range did you pay for the new one?
I have two furnaces, this one only heats the basement, the main one heats the rest of the house. I replaced the main one, which was a low grade Goodman brand, a couple years ago for 8k, it is Daikin brand and the most efficient one they have. The one for the basement was a lennox whisper heat, the heat exchanger went out and you literally can’t buy a replacement part for it. I bought the cheapest possible for the basement, which is a 4k Rheem.
Our house is smaller. A few years ago I was told to budget about $3.5k. I have a feeling that now it will be a bunch more. Since ours is so old, if the mother board goes, so does the furnace since they don’t make parts for it anymore.
Yeah if they told you to budget 3.5k before COVID you can probably double that now, though it does depend on what you buy. I have no clue why my house has a separate furnace for the basement, it makes no sense to me.

Our house is under 3,000 square feet, and I think they figured a bit over 5 or 6 grand to replace the furnace & the outside A/C unit.
My A/C unit is fairly new, so we won’t need to replace that, just the furnace. But I’m kind of a tightwad, so I won’t replace the furnace until the day it dies.
That’s what I’m doing, but I have a feeling it’s going to die soon. That’s why I’m preparing, interested to hear which brand people have purchased & whether they’re happy with it.
I haven’t prepared by doing any research, but I do have money set aside for it.
We’re close to needing one, too. Budgeted the $5K it’s going to take.

when i was getting quotes on a new furnace, one of the “big name” companies came out while i was at work, and told my wife that the old furnace we had could literally blow up at any moment and that we need to replace it asap. she called me super worried and upset.
i got the number for the tech that came out and ripped him a new one for scarying a stay at home mom of 3 kids like that and told him not only will we not use them but i will tell everyone i know not to use them. i was PISSED
Interesting, did any of the other techs say the same thing? Some of those companies will say all kinds of stuff to get you to replace instead of repair, especially the places that try to sign you up for their membership thing.

Yeah once they reach 25 years depending on the model it could literally be any day. When we bought our house in July of 2017 the furnace was like 26 years old but seemed fine. Then in January I’m out visiting fam 11 hours away and my pregnant wife is home, temp is like -5 at 9pm and it goes out. I just started calling every HVAC googlemaps showed around our house to get a repairman over there and when I finally find one that does 24 hours the guy got over there super quick and he’s like yeah this things cooked, I just told him over the phone to put in the absolute most efficient and durable he had. I wish I had just replaced it earlier.
I have some heat sources I can use if ours would go out, if necessary, so I’m not worried about anything catastrophic happening. I’ll just let this beast run until it dies.
Same here. Even still, I’m sure that mine will crap out on the coldest day of the year and that will be a Sunday so no one will come out to put in a new one until Monday.

Mine is 27 years old. I got a 1 year home warranty as part of the offer negotiations so kind of hoping it craps out before August of next year. But it does seem like it’s in pretty good condition so who knows.

Got stuck behind someone who refused to go more than 20 mph in their Honda Fit on the way into work this morning – even on plowed roads that were nearly dry. Never looked back at me once in their rear view mirror, and I had a pretty good tailgate going on the dry sections.

When people tailgate me I slow down until they back off then hold the slower speed for a few minutes to make sure they got the point. Another trick my dad taught me is if somebody is following close at night and/or has their brights on behind you, tilt your driver side mirror our all the way. It will shine their headlights back in their face.

Nah, I’m pretty quick to the draw and a better shot than the average person. Drive like a decent person and get off my ass and we won’t have a problem. The headlight trick is pretty fun though. You can tell the instant those lights hit their eyes. If you’re on a county road they’ll damn near go in the ditch. I guess I still have a little of that MN passive aggressive in me.
Driving back from Colorado post Thanksgiving we got stuck behind a pickup driving 5 miles under the speed limit at night on a hilly 2 lane road. Unfortunately my wife was driving and proceeded to ride his bumper for about 15 miles while she got more and more frustrated. Eventually she honked the horn…that never solves anything.
Admittedly not the best driving etiquette, but I do use tailgating as a way to try and alert people that they are causing traffic by driving too slow. There was a line of at least 15 cars backed up following me and this person this morning. Or the bane of my existence – people going under the speed limit in the left lane of a highway.
But when I get tailgated either going 5-10 over the limit, or when there’s obviously a line of cars ahead of me I have found that a nice big wave they can see through my rear windshield gets the point across.
I do the driver side mirror trick all the time to those fuckers with the Xenon or 400,000 lumen LED headlights. Can’t believe that headlight brightness isn’t more tightly regulated, tbh.
Yeah I don’t go under the limit generally but will slow down as far as necessary if I am going at least the speed limit and somebody feels the need to tailgate me. I will happily go 20 in a 45 if I was going at least 45 and had somebody ride my backside. I don’t wave or acknowledge they are there other than slowly reducing my speed until they get the point and hopefully rethink some of their life choices. I am very, very rarely in a hurry to get anywhere as I plan ahead properly and leave plenty early.
I plan ahead, too. I still drive AT LEAST 5 mph over the limit, normally more.
Yeah, I’ve noticed the further east I go from here the more over the speed limit you need to go to keep up with traffic. I don’t even have to look at license plates to know when one of the Texas refinery contractors is going by me on the interstate. They go by fast enough that you can’t see the license plate if you try.

Yeah, I don’t worry about it after the amount of times I’ve seen somebody driving like a moron way too fast and then I end up sitting at a light next to them. If I don’t big deal, what did you really save yourself on a short commute? Maybe 5 minutes if you’re lucky? Not worth it to me. I will be the guy with the cruise set at the speed limit and be perfectly content to let you impatient people steam.
As long as you’re aware of what is going on and not clogging up lanes of highway by being more left than you need to, that’s fine.
I don’t drive in the left lane unless passing and will speed up to get by somebody if necessary. It should be legal to push people that drive below the speed limit in the left lane into the median. I don’t impede traffic, I’m just not in a hurry. In general, people drive slower here. Yes there are those that don’t (mostly out of staters), but in general people here aren’t in that big of a hurry.

Exactly. If it appears that you have a funeral procession behind you, and you’re not leading a funeral procession, then you’re driving too slow.
Many people have absolutely no spatial awareness when they are driving, which blows my mind. If you’re not paying attention, you’re much more likely to get hit.
One time I was driving my niece and her 4 girls to Florida and I did most of the driving. I finally had to take a nap and when I woke up I could have reached out and touched the car in front of us. We were on a 4 lane interstate and the other lanes were not full. Why was she tailgating a guy then? I don’t know, but I told her to get off at the next ramp and I took over driving again. Of the 26 hour drive I drove about 23 of it. On the way home I drove the whole way.
I have a recurring encounter every morning with a variety of drivers. I almost never speed and the new Vulva also looks at me disapprovingly and flashes “didn’t you see that speed limit sign” in the dash display. So I set the cruise to 65 on the highway and within a mile or two get a car on my bumper, they can’t pass because of the solid lines. Coming into West Glendive, the speed limit drops to 55 by the lake and then 40 by Highland Park, they get closer and closer and closer. Merge onto the interstate where I usually only get up to 70 or so, not the 80 limit, as it is only a mile and a half to the downtown exit. Car behind will blast by consuming petrol furiously to zoom ahead. For that matter I start coasting halfway across the Yellowstone bridge so as to be going exactly 20 mph as I merge onto the main drag at the top of the off ramp.
Inevitably at that time of day the car(s) are going to the exact same place I’m going…and they beat me to the door of the hospital by 30 seconds.

Ditto. I will have somebody blast past me going at least 10 mph over the limit on the interstate while I go my nice 65. I will get to my exit and pull up to one of the 3 lights that are inevitably red and be sitting bumper to bumper with mister speed racer.
I’m about 25/75 with that mindset now, it’s gaining as I get older.
The youth in me just wants to drive fast and get where I am going faster.
I also try to follow the speed limit. The only time I push things is when I need to make it to a toilet, like we are talking Def Con 1 levels.

Volunteer thing we do for work. They give bikes to kiddos in need, so a bunch of us at work get together to put the bikes together for them so they can give them to the kids.
It’s likely different in Bismarck (lots of paved trails) but that is one thing I definitely notice, seems rare to see kids on bikes anymore. They seem to go from the “I need a ride to my friend’s house five blocks away, don’t make me walk or I will be snatched” stage to the “I need a car to drive five blocks plus gas money” stage fairly seamlessly.
We do have a great trail system. Lots of kiddos ride their bikes to school & such (not in winter, obviously), but we don’t have the rampant crime that they have in Billings. Kiddo and I put a lot of miles on our bikes in the spring, summer, & fall.
Different age for sure. I grew up biking all over town mostly just for the fun of it.
