Where the Vikings Need to DO Better
This week is dragging on as we await Sunday’s game against the hated *aints. I hope that Kirk Cousins is able to use this game to break out of the funk he’s been in for much of the young season. He’s made plays and made some tremendous reads and throws, but he’s also had long stretches where he’s been indecisive, hesitant, and inaccurate. If the Vikings want to make a run this year, they’ll need Kirk to be more consistent.
On the Vikings’ defense, the run defense HAS been consistent, but unfortunately, they’ve been consistently bad. It seems like opposing running backs gain five yards before the defense decides to try to tackle them. They need to do better.
The Vikings pass defense hasn’t been lights out, either. Receivers have FAR too much cushion as they’re running their routes, which is a coaching/scheme issue, but personnel could also play a role. Both components of the defense will need to improve as the season progresses as well.
Vikings’ Strengths
Who’s doing things right for the Vikings so far this year? Well, I hope you’re sitting down, but the O-line is suddenly a strength! After 8 years of abysmal performance, it seems we’ve finally found a competent group of big dudes. I think the coaching changeover has been a huge boost to the O-line as well. In the previous eight years, we turned over our offensive coordinator almost annually (more frequently than that in 2018 when DerFlippy didn’t last the entire season. Great hire, Rick!), which is never a good thing.
The Vikings’ Special Teams have performed admirally thus far as well. Greg Joseph is 3 for 5, but both misses were from 56, so I don’t weigh those misses very heavily. The punting has been solid, as has been both the punt and kick coverage units.
The Vikings’ running game has also been sufficient when they’ve been used. I’ll give them a meh, they kinda fall in between “strengths” and “needs improvement”, in my opinion.

I hate the dead cap hits, they’ll destroy a team’s ability to build, but sometimes you have to go through some pain to get where you want to go. The more I look into the contracts we have, the more I realize just how inept Rick was. I contend that the turning point was the offseason between 2017 & 2018, he went to complete shit after that & screwed the team over for years into the future.

Rick overpaid on nearly every contract the past couple years, and they’re structured like shit, backloaded & what not. He really put the team in a bad position.

Absolutely. That Barr contract is hurting a lot this year, $11 million in dead cap. Rudy has another $3 million in dead cap this year, & he hasn’t played here since 2020. Ownership should have seen this long ago and done something about Rick.

Agree. Looking at the extensions & how the contracts are structured, it sure looks like they’re seeing what they can do with what they have, then be in a position to recreate the team in 2024.

I’m a Milwaukee guy
Milwaukee had us out to tour their factory & HQ years ago, it was so impressive. I use DeWalt, but Milwaukee is equally as good, maybe better. Very impressive seeing their facilities & R&D stuff (the stuff they allowed us to see).
I also wore my Adrian Peterson jersey to the Brewers game that Milwaukee took us to. Hosted us in their corporate suite, we were all somewhat tipsy when we left the hotel, and they had a fridge full of Spotted Cow at the suite, and we sucked down a lot of that stuff.

I break their tools with ease, Harbor Freight has comparable quality at lower prices. If I need a tool for a one-time thing, I go to Harbor Freight. Got a set of large impact drive sockets there for less $$ than I’d have paid for one socket at Lowes or something.

Had mine done in 2000. My hazy recollection is I had all the testing done the day before…then the day of I showed up, they put 2 mg of lorazepam under my tongue, and had me wait in the waiting room. After that things were pretty blurry pun intended although I remember the doc saying look directly at the red dot and when he peeled back my cornea the red dot got real huge and asking him what part of the huge red orb do I look at? I don’t think he answered and I wondered if my eyes would come out cross-eyed.

Oh, one item of note in my occupation…both my actual employer in the big city and the hospital in Glendive I work out of published the same CDC press release revising mask guidelines. Despite citing the same data, the big city system will continue to require universal masking, while the small town hospital has now made masks optional.
Two and a half years later, I’m not fumbling to put on a mask with a bunch of crap in my arms when I come in the door in the morning, and get to see my coworker’s faces. So nice.

I can tell you all three of my grandkids age 10-16 have a pretty good grasp of homosexuality vs heterosexuality, boys dressing as girls, girls who want to become boys, etc…I think people vastly overestimate the ability of virtual strangers to change their kids outlook on life, I think it is absentee parents who abrogate parental responsibilities that would have children susceptible to something not in their nature.
I think of it like the homeless person set up on the corner with a sign and a puppy. My ten year old granddaughter might say you should give him $100 so he can feed the puppy….well dear that $100 doesn’t go to the puppy, that goes to his addiction. She knows what addictions are.

My father in law owned a lawn sprinkler installation company in Billings for decades, & he installed & has been servicing at this dude’s house nearly the entire time. Oline: Not just the coaching, but 5 solid “home-grown” players. Good drafting and they are coming together, getting used to playing together. Getting Ingram and some improvement by Cleveland may have helped Bradbury. Darrisaw is just fun to watch.
The line will be a bit up and down, but I expect them to finish above average.

I’m good. Did a mess of procedures yesterday, including one I haven’t done in many years. Nobody died so that’s good. When I got home, the electricians had finished the whole hookup the feeder panel in the shop to the meter, etc…and several of my outlets were shorted out. They were good natured about it, fixing them today. Then I started working on getting the overhead door hooked up and open and close limits set, took about an hour and a half, when I came in my wife said where the hell were you and gave me the silent treatment, no feet were offered for a rub. Such is life, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.
Oh yeah, my sister asked my mom to submit to a geriatric assessment and she refused so today my sister is talking to her doctor trying to see if he will assess whether she is competent to make medical decisions.

Ultrasound guided breast biopsy. Last one I did has to be third year of residency, so about 2008.
Lest you be horrified, keep in mind all ultrasound guided or CT guided biopsies follow the same basic rule of “connect the dots”, the dots in this situation being the skin entry site and the lesion of interest. This is where the hand eye coordination of video games comes into play. The medical knowledge is knowing what is between the dots, what you can safely traverse and what you cannot.
Reminds me of doing a deep pancreatic biopsy during training. The biopsy gun was buried at 20 cm depth and when I got done said to the consultant, “I don’t see how I did that without traversing the stomach.” The answer of course was I did, per the plan. Little punctures in the stomach heal quickly.

I love the energy and attitude he brings to the team, and he’s a hell of a player. The defense is still finding its groove, but I think he’ll be a key component for the D this year (if he stays healthy).

Dalvin Cook is one of the best in the league, but he is injury prone, and there is no way that the team is going to let him play out his contract as-is. Therefore, they’ll either have to restructure one of Rick’s messes of a contract, or find a way to move on. If they do move on, we need to start looking at options for restocking the cupboard. Even if you keep Mattison, you need another stud RB to go along with him. Unless you think we currently have that stud on the roster, we’ll need to draft someone. Here are some options:

He and cook are almost identical size.
They’re similar in many ways. Cook has more burst out of the backfield & has a home run potential that we haven’t really seen with Mattison. Other than that, they’re very similar.
Give Mattison the carries cook gets and you’d probably see it. Maybe you’d even get 17 games out of him.
No you won’t see it, Mattison has started many games in place of Cook and does not have the same talent that cook does. Doesn’t mean he can’t be productive though and probably could get through an entire season.

There have been a few other instances like that with mattison which would need to be cleaned up if he was going to be out RB1.

Mattison seems to use his strength better than Ham. Ham is chunkier, weights substantially more, but doesn’t seem to have enough strength to get through a fight.
Ham, although a Minnesnowden, is just a camp body in my mind. In spite of a Pro-bowl nod, he’s only gotten 90 yards rushing in 7 years, while doing a bit of pass-catching and just a bit of blocking.
We need to upgrade.

Wreck did a lot of damage to this organization from 2018-2021.

I agree…concussions are very complex medically there’s still a lot to learn we don’t understand especially with the varying degrees. Simply though, it’s not good to get your bell rung that we know. But when there’s millions on the line and these players face competition internally to keep their spot and perform for that possible big payday, this is what you get.

If a team runs on 3rd and long every time, they’re going to have a very poor 3rd down conversion rate, even if they have a good RB and a good offensive line.
