Halloween is over, and I hope all of you had fun trick-or-treating with the kiddos, or getting hammered, or whatever else you decided to do on Halloween night. I’m just excited now, because the end of Halloween means it’s time for me to start putting up Christmas decorations. I don’t turn them on until Thanksgiving weekend, but I like to get them done before the temperatures plummet, the snow flies, and the roof is full of ice. My son & I plan to go bonkers this year. Well, we go bonkers every year, but THIS year, we plan to go more bonkers than we’ve ever gone before. I can’t wait.

If you don’t adjust for the bye week, the Vikings are exactly 26th for total yards.
Divide by games, and you get 15th for yards/game.
Last week they most likely were 28th in total yards.
Missing one game’s worth of yards is huge at this point in the season.

In other news, somehow I have lived an enlightened life to the age of 53; perhaps it is because most bathrooms I use have personal attendants. I went literally next door to use the restroom and realized too late there was no toilet paper. What a conundrum. Studying the toilet paper dispenser from my position on the toilet, it looked like there was paper in there, only on the other side of the opening. Utilizing my finely honed diagnostic skills, I was able to ascertain that there was a sliding door on the underside of the dispenser which opened to reveal the unused roll. I let out an audible “yes!” which was greeted by uncomfortable silence in the restroom.
MT Official Cause of Death: Shot at prairie dog with beta gun, it ricocheted off, hit his fuel tank where his John Deere was fueling up, exploded, which somehow turned the key, and put itself in gear, then ran through nearby fence, which broke and snapped back for miles, hitting his step-daughter in the pants, which caused her to throw the grandkid over her shoulder, where he landed on his DeWolt power tool, where the trigger was activated and it walked itself down the road and ran over MT’s foot, where he bled out because he didn’t have a diagnostic machine handy to tell him what was rong.
My stepdaughter really gets up for Halloween, they had their yard festooned with skeletons and spider webs, etc. Wolf howls, eerie music. She and the Italian girl sat outside in witch outfits stirring a bubbling pot. Recorded the top ten kiddos of the night. My favorite was this one six year old, comes up really edgy, keeps looking back at his parents, says to the two witches, “uh….errr…..are your parents home”. Funny how as humans we are programmed to find certain things scary. Another house had a tunnel set up you had to hunker down and crawl through to get to the front door, kids DID NOT want to get in there, kept trying to find a way around.
PS Two people went as her husband (my son in law the Saints fan who sat with me while Kamara singlehandedly dismantled the Vikings on Christmas Day) for Halloween. Hahaha priceless one of my technologists showed me the pics.

I like the Hockenson trade for two reasons:
1) Even though he was drafted early, he’s still a 1st round talent, and a huge jump from Irv Smith Jr
2) The swap of picks means that MIN basically gave up a 3rd, which I’m very OK with

$850,000 ish in cap space before the trade.
They had to pay out the dead cap (which was already paid). Our obligation is a bit over half a million for the rest of the year. $9 million cap hit next year, would restructure prior to that, most likely.

Yup. I see. It means those teams are doing a better job getting 40%+ of the remaining yardage on 1st down, 65%+ of remaining yardage on 2nd down, and/or converting 3rd (and 4th) downs.
Consistent efficiency is the kind of thing that drives these rankings. The idea is to take the sustainable parts of the game that correlate most with winning over significant sample size (hundreds of games) and see which team is most exemplifying those things.
We all know some teams get lucky and win a couple of games more than they should, and vice versa. Some teams lose after outplaying their opponents.
Vikings opponents’ QBs have outplayed Cousins (in DYAR, one of their QB metrics) in 4 of their 7 games so far. Cousins outplayed Rodgers, Fields and Goff.
I’ve used their metrics before when looking at offenses or defenses.
I just like how the 6-1 Vikings and the 2-6 Jags are basically the same team.

Cowboys defense is WAY better than these other teams – about as good as BUF or PHI, and their offense is 12th and should improve. Plus they have the 2nd best ST in the league.
but KC and BAL are pretty close overall, actually. Dallas is a bit of a jump up from them both. Then PHI and BUF are close to each other, but a fair bit ahead of DAL.

I would agree with that. Your ranking had us average out at 19th, which is around where we should be
if you weight special teams equally with offense and defense, anyway. FO has the Vikings at 18th overall right now, so it’s all very close.
They’re playing like a 4-3 or 3-4 team right now and got some luck along the way. Luck often evens out.
That said, if a better TE means more offense and more opportunities for Cook/Thielen/Osborn and maybe even Jefferson over the course of several drives, and more time of possession, and therefore fresher defense, well, and everything falls into place and no one gets hurt AND we have the chance to host multiple playoff games….
…it could be fun!

Interesting because before the game when I went to nfl.com to follow it. They had the Vikes offense 28 or so and the defense mid teens. Wonder why such a difference?

They could turn out to be a paper tiger, not sold on the Vikes being a contender at all. But 28th just seems incredibly low for the production this offense has generated.

Generally speaking a team’s record in one score games is usually right around .500, the Vikings were actually only one game off from that last year at 6-8 in one score games. The Vikings are 5-0 so far in 2022. There will likely be some regression.
They’re just going to start double digiting everybody like Skolly predicts.

they have the 2nd best overall starting position on offense (every drive of the year so far averaged) and they seem to be gaining a lot of yards via penalty, so their scoring/yardage is kind of off the charts (and maybe unsustainable?)

Due to penalties and being given the ball we have scored a ton with very low yardage production.
I know, I was really surprised because they had the defense in the mid teens. First time I saw the defense ranked higher than the offense all season.

I don’t, either. Trade away one of the few pieces they have that they can buiild on, and get very little in return. From my understanding, we lose our 2nd rounder next year but get a 4th in return, & we swap picks in the 4th round in 2024. Plus, we get one of the league’s better young tight ends.
Lions fans actually seem good with it. They think TJ is not a 1st round talent and they needed to get something for him and also get out from under his contract next year. They see him as an above-average TE who would demand top-5 TE money soon. They really like having 5 picks in the top-100 in the upcoming draft.

I feel terrible for the Zimmer family. Everything I’ve read about Adam is that he was a really good guy. His sister posted a heart wrenching tribute which also gave him credit for really stepping up as a big brother when their Mom died.
I’ve read that the police report said that someone asked them to do a wellness check on Adam Monday afternoon, police found him dead at his home. Police said there was nothing suspicious and no evidence of any foul play, so we will have to wait for the autopsy.

Oh, no doubt they suck, but if our luck switches we are doomed. Imagine losing 5 starters to IR. Most penalties in the nfl, lose our starting qb for 2 games, go -3 on turnovers each game next 8 games. If everything we got lucky on to win 6 games reverses we could easily go 1-7.
