Happy hump day, everyone, and welcome to Skoloholics! Join us for Minnesota Vikings talk, Vikings news, news from around the NFL, and virtually any other topic. On this site, the real action is in the comments, so if you haven’t checked out the comments section yet, you should join us! This is the daily back page, which is wide open. Therefore, you will see discussion of nearly ANY topic here. Our one rule here is: “Remember, be cool to one another”. Also, a word to the wise, don’t feed the trolls. SKOL!!!!!!

Man, I despise the fact that we’re discussing the off-season already. I’m still disgusted with the Vikings’ defensive “performance” on Sunday, and the fact that the Vikings are out of the playoffs just doesn’t sit well with me. That being said, that’s reality right now, so the best thing to do is look at the off-season and how the front office is going to go about making the Vikings a better team in 2023. That’s how I cope, I look for solutions.

In order to keep the discussion going on some of our favorite subjects, we began a “Where Do We Go From Here?” series for each roster spot or coaching position where a change is imminent. Where applicable, we’ll include a poll on each story. Below are our two current polls, which will remain open until Friday at noon.

Poll Results

Should the Vikings move on from Ed Donatell?

  • Yes, fire him yesterday (70%, 35 Votes)
  • Keep Donatell and fix the personnel issue(s) (12%, 6 Votes)
  • Maybe (10%, 5 Votes)
  • I don't know (8%, 4 Votes)

Total Voters: 50

What do the Vikings do with Kirk Cousins?

  • Keep him through the end of his current deal, then move on (43%, 20 Votes)
  • Keep him and sign him to an extension (41%, 19 Votes)
  • Pull off some sort of trade (15%, 7 Votes)

Total Voters: 46

Minnesota Vikings News:

We looked at the Vikings’ potential options with Ed Donatell and the Vikings defense.

We also explored where the Vikings may go with Kirk Cousins.

Adam Thielen’s wife hinted at the inevitable via Instagram after Sunday’s loss, from Yahoo Sports. It’ll be a bummer to watch some of our long-time favorites depart, but this off-season will likely bring many more departures like this. All the best to Thielen and his family in their future endeavors. I have a deep respect for how hard he worked to get to where he is on the field, but more so for all that he does off the field. Great people that the world needs more of.

Video of the Day:

I found this one yesterday, really cool stuff.

Has Thielens production gone down because of KOC, or was it always trending in this direction?

I blame KOC, he doesn´t seem to like Thielen for some reason. Of course age is catching up with Adam as well.

I think Thielen see’s the writing on the wall. I’m sure he like’s JJ but he’s probably upset he no longer has a primary role in the offense. And it’s probably not going to get any better…JJ wants his 2,000 yard season and I’m guessing KOC is determined to help him get there. Plus, you’ve got KJ on the rise and some other young guys that look interesting (I’m thinking primarily of Nailor).

That said, I also think there was a notable decline in AT’s speed, route running and his historically “sticky hands” this season. So, IMO, if Adam is convinced he can still play a greater role on the offense, it’s probably in both side’s best interest to part ways. Especially before his wife totally tarnishes his MN legacy with stupid, passive-aggressive posts on social media.

so trying to figure out who to have be “my team” now that the vikings are out.

NFC i think i can easily cheer for the 49ers. no one on that team i hate and they are fun to watch.

AFC i think it’s between Chiefs and Bills, both teams are fun to watch

Ben brought up Will Levis being the QB for the Vikings to draft. They will need to get up into the 5-6 range with it because of the Raiders, Falcons, and Panthers.

What would it take? This years and next years 1st. And probably a 2 from next year as well. IF its a team like the Seahawks at 5, a case could be made that Danielle Hunter gets thrown in as well to sweeten the pot.

It is possible to move up and go get a guy, and it won’t sink the franchise forever either. Look at the eagles and what they gave up for Wentz…and now they’re right back in the thick of it a couple years later.

HUNViking

You need to get lucky with the right circumstances at the right time, I guess. Roseman got lucky he could pass Wentz off to the Colts and recoup many picks, just like he managed to pass Bradford off to the Vikes.

That said, the Vikes will have to take the risk at some point. Need a franchise QB, preferably on a rookie deal. Can´t make an omelet without breaking some eggs.

Heh heh Monday we had derr appointments so hauled the chocos with to the Magic City. Took them to Plaws and Claws for daycare. Bubba first time at daycare so they did temperament test then released to gen pop. New shift came on at 2 so when we picked up at 4 the older Tuck comes running out to us…no Bubba. “Uh they’re having a hard time catching him…he got through gate into next outdoor run…4 guys out there trying to catch him” finally comes in panting and the teenager with him completely out of breath…”he was not sure why we wanted him and ran”. Big goof.

Hunter would be most interesting as he’s not old and declining. He is still like 27, productive, but not the greatest scheme fit, will surely demand a contract extension, and has been a malcontent about being “underpaid” in the past despite season ending injuries. He is only getting 5.5 mil in actual cash for the upcoming season, he’s about to throw a huge fit about that for sure.

Strength of schedule when measured against your division rivals is really not much of impact. It’s 3 games.

Back when the season was a 14 game schedule, there were 6 games different and it was a real impact.

I’m not saying 3 games is zero impact, but it’s really not that big of thing anymore, when looking within the division.

Now for wildcard’s and playoff seeding, it does matter.

Not a chance as they would never take a deal near that and they can wait until we cut him and ink for 2m. Never in 1000 years could happen. He has 23M ded over next 3 years and I don’t see a way out but to Broke’s point they pay the same so might as well keep him. The issue is he can’t play anymore and would take snaps from young guys who need snaps.

A team trading for him would only owe him 13 mill in 2023 and 17 mill in 2024. Still high but not terrible if somebody thinks he can still play. What Spotrac shows there is basically no reason to cut him. 16.5 dead hit if you cut him before 3/17/23, at least the way I’m understanding it. 19 mill cap hit if you keep him. Reduce his base salary for 2023 and 2024. Make 2023 a roster bonus or guaranteed salary to avoid signing bonus, then you can go your separate ways less painfully in 2024.

He has an 11 mill base salary in 2023. Reduce that and his base salary in 2024. I doubt he thinks he’ll get that on the open market.

If they restructure before March they could just reduce that number. They wouldn’t have to do anything with it as long as Thielen agrees to it. That is a potentially big if but unless he thinks he will get 11 mill on the open market he could agree to a pay cut.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. Guys take pay cuts all the time, at least if they are realistic. The dead cap from the signing bonus will be there no matter what so might as well see if you can adjust the base salary and roster bonus to a more palatable number.

If they restructure his contract to say 5 mill base salary, the 11 mill means nothing. It is not guaranteed money until March. You’d basically be ripping up the old contract, giving him a new contract and still paying the signing bonus over the next 3 years.

Mick
Mick

That’s not how a restructure works. His old money doesn’t go away. That dead money is money already paid. That’s the 13 and whatever million.

it’s been paid and still needs to he accounted for.

If he plays on his current deal they are only paying him a little over 13 mill this year. Along with his base salary, his roster bonus could still be reduced or deleted as well (1.5 mill in 2023 and 2 mill in 2024). There is 13.5 mill in cash due in 2023 that could be reduced unless he thinks that’s what another team will offer him.

Yes, but his 11.8 mill 2023 salary is not guaranteed and has not been paid. Reduce that number and his overall cap hit for 2023 reduces as well. There is no way to get rid of the dead cap portion because like you said it has already been paid. It doesn’t mean you can’t reduce the currently unguaranteed salary.

On March 16, 2022 Thielen restructured the payment mechanisms in his contract. His overall salary remains the same but the team increased the salary tied to per game roster bonuses as part of the new contract. Thielen received $13.3 million in full guarantees and $18.3 million in injury guarantees as part of the new contract. He also received a $9 million signing bonus. IF Thielen is on the Vikings roster on the 3rd day of the 2023 league year his entire salary for 2023 will be fully guaranteed. The Vikings added a void year for salary cap purposes. The new contract created $5.16 million in cap space in 2022.

he has 13.3 guaranteed from last year. That’s his dead money. He’s getting it.

So any “new” deal still includes that old money. It’s already been paid. Him being on the roster guarantees another almost 20m for him.

Mick

So they redo the deal. 13.5m is dead. Now what?

resign for what?

what are the terms of the deal? How does it eat up money already paid? If they could’ve done it before why didn’t they do it last year?

bowbunch

He has 13.5 he has already been paid as signing bonus. He isn’t getting it, he has it, it just hasn’t counted against the cap. He is set to receive another $11.8 million (guaranteed March 17) in base salary and a $1.5 million roster bonus (actually $88 thousand per active game). That is $13.3 million in salary that could be reduced. Reduce the base salary to 5 million and you reduce the cap hit. You keep a veteran receiver that you are going to take a cap hit for anyway and instead of taking a cap hit for him to wear a different jersey you take the cap hit, yes you add a few million to it but reduce the overall cap hit in 2023, and keep him on your team. If he thinks he can still perform, add in performance bonuses to sweeten the deal.

11.8 salary
4.05 signing
1.5 roster
100k workout
2.5 restructure from previous years

19.967m for 2023.

Cutting him we get a 13.5m dead hit and save 6.5m toward the cap.

I think its wishful thinking that he will take less money just to stay in MN. Especially when someone is offering him more and he still gets what the Vikings owe him.

They need to shred the old contract and sign a new one as the restructure you can just move money around.. not totally negate it.

Hey Adam, you’re only worth 5m to us this year so we’re going to rip up your old deal and pay you 1/4 of what you’re due.

Hey Vikings.. Go fuck yourself.

That could very likely be the outcome, but he’s not guaranteed anything right now. He could just as well tell the Vikings to pound sand get cut and then fail to find a job and get nothing. That is unlikely but it comes down to what he thinks somebody else will offer him. I don’t know what a realistic salary number is, but if he agreed to a salary of 5.5 million you end up with a cap hit identical to the dead cap hit you have if you cut him as a pre- June 1 cut. That would also leave the 1.5 million in active game bonuses intact. If active all season, he could still make 7 million in new cash and the Vikings end up with the same cap hit as they would have if they outright cut him.

The biggest question is what Thielen thinks other teams are going to offer him. Will another team offer him $10 million? If that’s what he thinks and the Vikes offer 5 then see ya. If he doesn’t think he’ll get more than $5 million on the open market then take a $7 million deal and stay where you already are, unless you are truly unhappy and fed up with the new kumbaya offense.

AT this year did not show he is one of those guys.

I just look at it like I just filled the tank on my pickup and I’m gonna sell it. That money has been spent on the diesel so should I just let somebody else take advantage of it or find a way to use it? Not a perfect analogy, but if you can reduce the cap hit and keep it at or lower than what the dead cap would be, why not keep him? Reduce his snaps but at the very least you have him as depth on your team and you’re not taking a cap hit for him to play for another team.

Does he think somebody else will pay him more than 7 million for the year or give him a long term contract? If so then he says pound sand. I just figure if you are going to have a cap hit anyway you might as well try to get something out of it. In this scenario you would also reduce the 2024 base salary and you would still have 7 million in signing bonuses that would hit upon cutting in after 2023 or 2.25 million after 2024. They would likely end up reducing his base salary and then also moving some of that into a signing bonus which is what I would avoid. Offer him the reduced contract, see if there are some small things that can be changed to make both parties happy and if not move on.

I was thinking about Thielen driving into work this morning and wondered if something like this might be the “real reason” for his wife’s passive-aggressive Instagram that was posted yesterday. Now seeing this, it would seem to confirm he’s frustrated by his role in KOC’s offense.

That said, if that means he wants to extend his NFL career elsewhere, I can respect that. But if his wife is going to use social media to air his/her issues, then screw them. She’s going to damage one of the best “hometown kid makes good” stories I’ve ever seen.

Not to mention, I’m cancelling my family vacation to Detroit Lakes.

We are only in the 6-inch bracket tonight, I think. It is only for SW MN. We’ve been dealing with quite a bit of ice this year, which is more annoying than snow.

Headed into work, but thought I’d leave this little nugget for everyone before I go…

Since letting Kirk Cousins walk to the Vikings in 2018, the Commanders have started a dozen different quarterbacks in five years, marking a half-decade of instability. Their passing game has been almost the worst in the league over the past 5 years.

Since arriving here 5 seasons ago, Cousins has completed 67.8% of his passes for almost 21,000 yards and 153 TD’s with a cumulative passer rating of 100.9.

The Redskins passing game has produced 95 passing TD’s since Cousins left. In contrast, Cousins threw 81 TD’s in his three years as a starter with the Redskins. Cousins was never accepted or respected by Bruce Allen or Dan Snyder who sold their soul to draft RGIII whom Cousins eventually eclipsed as the starter and is no longer in the league. You can hate on Cousins but you cannot deny year in and year out he does his job well and holds up his end better than most.

I agree. I am a fan of Cuck Cousins and I want him to return with an extension to finish out his career as a Viking. I also would like them to draft and groom his replacement next year, preferably Sam Hartman. We’ll be set at the QB position for the next decade.

Fivefingers
Reply to  Lifer
18 January 2023 7:35 am

lmao, you are a total moran

NFL scouts project Hartman as a third-day draft pick — likely the sixth or seventh round — so the thought is that he can improve his stock with another year in college. ESPN reached out to three NFL scouts about Hartman, and none of them believed Hartman would get picked before the sixth round, if at all.

I can find better things to ruin my day about. I don’t need to come here and read constant toxic negativity about the same thing 1000 times a day. You’ve made your point clear. The Vikings are the worst organization in the league and will do nothing forever because they haven’t in the last 63 years and all the other teams are better in some way and won’t ever mess up their draft picks therefore further making them better than the Vikings. The question is… are you really saying Kirk Cousins is the reason the team loses games? IMO Cousins is the reason the Vikings are in games and have a chance to win. 21,000 yards and 153 TD’s in 5 seasons (and never missing a game for injury) are pretty impressive numbers. Especially with 5 different OC’s and an O-line that is really bad. No Vikings QB in their history has ever sniffed that kind of consistent production.

I don’t quite understand the hurried expectation of firing Donatell I read a lot here and on social media. I mean yes the man should and likely will be fired but no way did I expect them to do it the next day, week or possibly month. They’ll be methodical and respectful and meet, discuss let all the stakeholders from ownership to Brez and KAM give their impute and then the decesion will come.

it’s social media, where rational thought and reason are abandoned in favor of an emotional response.

I wrote yesterday that the team should take its time to analyze in depth the failure of the defense, seeing that Donatell never had such a bad defense before and in light of the roster he inherited to work with. I hope that´s what they are doing.

I’m curious what someone like Harrison Smith would have to say, he’s had a front row seat to the shitshow all season sitting back there in the deep shell just watching the D get sliced and diced up and down the field.

Will be a sad day when I have to retire my #22 jersey. That day might come real soon.

He’s a pretty quiet soft spoken dude, but I’m guessing if KOC asked him for his honest assessment of Donatell it would be something like, “that piss drunk cock sucker couldn’t coach us to a win against a lingerie football league team.”
